The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) is the largest labour organization in Canada, bringing together national and international unions, provincial and territorial federations of labour and community-based labour councils to represent more than 3 million workers across the country.
The CLC has a vacancy for a temporary Human Resources Generalist in our Headquarters office, based in Ottawa, Ontario, with regular presence in office expected. This exciting opportunity will appeal to an HR professional that is eager to work in a fast-paced workplace where every day will bring about new challenges.

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, and working closely with other departments, the HR Generalist will provide professional level support for ongoing day-to-day HR priorities, as well as contribute to new initiatives and support labour relations, as required.

This position is out-of- scope and excluded from CLC’s two (2) staff bargaining units.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting full cycle recruitment processes including coordinating postings, screening applicants, participating in interviews, conducting reference checks, arranging testing and preparing employment offers.
  • Coordinating the orientation and onboarding for new staff, including review of policies and procedures, and conducting health and safety briefings.
  • Organizing training and development initiatives for staff as directed.
  • Providing support regarding benefits inquiries from current staff, affiliates and retirees, and resolving issues as they arise.
  • Drafting various reports, letters and staff memos.
  • Ensuring accuracy of our staff leave entitlements, analyzing reports and records.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of new policies and procedures.
  • Overseeing the CLC Intranet (internal staff resource site) and ensuring information is up to date and accurate.
  • Providing administrative support to the Director on confidential labour relations files.
  • Ensuring day-to-day administrative staff coverage is available for various departments and events, identifying and filling gaps as needed.
  • Assisting in arranging logistics around staff conferences and events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources or related field; equivalent education and experience will be considered.
  • Five (5) years of progressive experience in a HR generalist role, preferably within a unionized environment or not-for-profit sector.
  • Demonstrated experience with full cycle recruitment, organizing staff training, processing leaves, returns to work, and handling benefit claim enquiries, thorough knowledge of HR procedures, policies and relevant legislation.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks with conflicting duties and timelines, and balance workflow to meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ethics, and cultural awareness, along with a commitment to trade union, equity, and social justice principles.
  • Resourceful, detail-oriented and problem-solving aptitude.
  • Excellent research, writing and presentation skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office, HRIS systems, and comfortable learning new technical systems as required.
  • English is essential. Bilingualism (EN/FR) will be considered a strong asset.

The annual starting salary for this position is $107,705.39, plus generous health, vision, and dental benefits, group life insurance and LTD coverage, pension and annual leave entitlement, as well as free parking, monthly coverage for internet and cell phone, and more.
