We are recruiting a Casual Housing Support Caseworker for Haven House, an emergency shelter bed program that supports self-identified women experiencing or at risk of homelessness, receiving temporarily shelter. It offers assistance in accessing permanent housing and in-house support services, including life skills training, counselling, employment, mental health and addiction resources and referrals to other community resources.
The Housing Support Caseworker work varied shifts including weekends and is required to assume after-hours on call duties on a rotating basis.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides primary counselling, resource referrals, crisis intervention, conflict resolution and support to all residents.
  • Participates in the shift schedule rotation as part of our 24-hour staffing model, as well as an on-call rotation.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date records and statistics regarding all aspects of service delivery.
  • Acquainted with each resident’s individual Plan of Care, identify needs, recommend changes in individual program plans, and provide assistance that is consistent with the plan for each individual.
  • Provides statistical and evaluative information to management levels when required.
  • Participates in the Case Management Team of Haven House; Primary Counsellor(s), Manager of Haven House, and other Community Supports.
  • Provides primary supervision, develop Plans of Care and provide referrals to community agencies to assigned case load.
  • Keeps abreast of trends, community resources and developments in the profession by participating in workshops, conferences, and continued professional development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager or designate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An undergraduate degree and/or diploma in a related human/social service field or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required for this position.
  • Understanding of the complex challenges experienced by homeless women in obtaining housing, employment, educational and community opportunities. Thorough knowledge of agencies, resources, and supports within Peel to address identified challenges.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations including those who have experienced homelessness, violence and isolation, and with complex mental health needs and substance use disorders.
  • Possesses familiarity with HTI/By-Name List/SPDAT platforms.
  • Proficient knowledge of Housing First Principles, Residential Tenancies Act, and the Landlord Tenant Board. Knowledge of government financial assistance programs such as OW, PHIPP, ODSP.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates problem-solving and conflict resolution skills with the ability to be creative, proactively resolve conflicts and provide crisis and intervention supports.
  • Possess organizational and good time management skills.
  • Ability to be adaptable with a flexible approach in dealing with the unique needs and qualities of each client through a strength-based and person-centred approach.
  • Demonstrates multicultural sensitivity and commitment working with the socially and economically disadvantaged.
  • Ability to descalate crisis situations and work positively within a multi-disciplinary team environment.

MANDATORY JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Standard First Aid / CPR certification.
  • Evidence of COVID-19 vaccination status.
  • Evidence of a Tuberculosis Test and compliance with the TB Control Program.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Review (Vulnerable Sector Search).
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds.
  • Doctors note of fitness to perform the duties of the job.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license, with satisfactory driving record.
