The Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto (NWRCT) is a community-based organization funded by government programs and public and private donations, dedicated to providing resources and support to Urban Indigenous Women and their families. About The Role
The Housing Outreach Initiative Program focuses on connecting clients to emergency shelters and maintaining permanent housing. This role includes providing services for housing stabilization, referrals, and provision of resources. The Housing Outreach will be directly accountable to the Program Manager or a designated person for the execution of some of the activities described below.
What You Will Bring Along:
- Post-secondary diploma/degree in social work, community wellness, etc. with a minimum of three (3) years’ work experience in community service delivery or other related, equivalent experience.
- Computer Savvy and working knowledge of Office equipment.
- Knowledge of the city of Toronto's housing systems, programs, and supports.
- Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and family dynamics.
- Experience and Knowledge of resources to support clients dealing with substance abuse.
- Strong experience in client advocacy providing services to Indigenous women, and families including those fleeing violence and the homeless population.
- Current Police Record Checks and Vulnerable Sector Screening are required.
- First Aid and CPR certifications are an asset.
- Proven analytical, problem-solving, and crisis management skills.
- Ability to network and maintain relationships with service providers and other entities.
- Strong organizational, facilitation, and time management skills
What You Will Be Doing:
- Empower women to articulate their needs and goals and to advocate for themselves in housing conflicts.
- Complete intakes to assess client suitability for the housing program and provide appropriate internal/ external referrals.
- Build strong working relationships with housing providers and market rent landlords for units and program support, build partnerships, and create awareness.
- Assist clients in:
- Eviction prevention including repayment planning and advocacy/mediation; accompaniment and guidance at Landlord & Tenant Board hearings and advocacy.
- Finding market rental housing includes arranging viewings and appointments and guiding clients in market rental searches.
- Accessing, completing, and submitting applications to social housing providers
- Immediate and on-the-ground housing support to shelters and emergency services.
- Agency information on housing access, spiritual needs support, access to medicines, and cultural activities.
- Facilitate housing workshops and outreach initiatives, for community members, new clients, and agency partners to inform them about NWRCT’s assistance and services.
- Collect, maintain, and share current housing rental database including safe and affordable rentals as well as an inventory list of drop-in supplies and materials.
