The Ottawa Parent Resource Centre (PRC) supports caregivers and families across Ottawa with responsive, evidence-informed programs and services that strengthen parenting capacity, wellbeing, and connection.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The In-Home Parent Support Worker plays a key role in the delivery and day-to-day administration of the Ottawa Parent Resource Centre’s (PRC) Family Resilience Program. This position provides compassionate, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive support to vulnerable parents and their families through in-office, virtual, and in-home services, as appropriate to client needs.
The In-Home Parent Support Worker delivers individualized, strengths-based support tailored to each family. Services may include guidance related to child development, parenting strategies, safety, nutrition, and life skills, as well as coordination with other service providers and support in accessing community resources.
The In-Home Parent Support Worker supports program operations through preparation and facilitation of individual and group sessions and actively participates in community outreach efforts to promote PRC services, build partnerships, and increase program accessibility for families.
In addition to direct service delivery, the role includes responding to the Parent Support Line, offering timely information, referrals, and brief support to families seeking assistance. The position also involves maintaining accurate and confidential client records, supporting data collection and reporting requirements, and contributing to effective client management practices.
REPORTS TO: Family Resilience Program Manager
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct Service & Clinical Support
- Coordinates day-to-day client services under the guidance of the FRP Manager.
- Provide ongoing, relationship-based support to families navigating complex life circumstances, including crisis, housing instability, or system involvement.
- Support parents in real-life application of strategies within the home environment.
- Advocate for families and coordinate with external service providers (e.g., schools, CAS, healthcare providers).
- Completes general intakes for in-home parenting support services and parenting groups.
- Provides one-to-one parent education, life-skills support, resource materials, and community referrals.
- Develops and implements practical strategies with parents based on their parenting goals.
- Answers, monitors, and manages the Parent Support phone line (PSL), ensuring timely responses, effective triage, accurate documentation, and consistent database management.
- Assists with preparation for support groups and community events.
- Reviews case planning and concerns with the FRP Manager.
Program Design, Evaluation & Continuous Improvement
- Contributes to program evaluation activities, including data collection, participant feedback, and facilitation observations, to support evidence-informed practices.
- Participate in regular reflection, debriefing, and continuous quality improvement processes to strengthen program delivery and outcomes.
- Maintains accurate and timely documentation, and supports reporting requirements related to group implementation, participation, and outcomes.
- Contributes to the ongoing development and refinement of parenting group curriculum, tools, and resources to ensure relevance, accessibility, and alignment with evidence-based models.
- Supports the strengthening of sustainable, high-quality parenting programming through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and capacity-building within the team.
Community Development
- Promotes PRC’s mission and Family Resilience Program services to the community.
- Strengthens referral pathways to and from PRC and contributes to integrated community strategies.
- Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with community agencies and stakeholders to improve outcomes for families and priority populations.
- Participates in strategic networks and community committees as required.
Administration
- Works collaboratively with Family Resilience Program staff and other facilitators to ensure comprehensive service delivery and client support.
- Keeps up-to-date client flies using approved templates, software and procedures.
- Prepares reports, maintains documentation, and statistical records.
- Keeps all FRP related materials, manuals and handbooks up to date.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of social media, websites and public-facing communications related to the Family Resilience Program.
- Keeps track of success stories and other relevant information, as required.
- Attend staff, team and supervisory meetings, as established.
- Other duties may be required or assigned.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 3 years of progressive experience developing and delivering front-line programs and services for children and families in a community-based or social service setting, with demonstrated ability to support diverse populations.
- Experience delivering short‑term, situational counselling related to parenting stressors, family conflict, emotional distress, and mental health concerns.
- Strong skills in relationship-based practice, crisis intervention, and complex case management.
- Experience providing in-home or community-based support to families with multiple or intersecting needs.
- Ability to build trust and engagement with families experiencing vulnerability or system involvement.
- Proven experience in program development and designing curriculum (e.g., session plans, facilitation guides, participant materials), including workshop and group facilitation.
- Knowledge of early childhood development, child development, and family support approaches, including strengths-based, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive practices.
- Experience providing in-home, virtual, or community-based services in environments where families feel most comfortable.
- Experience assisting families with navigation of social services and advocating or collaborating with other service providers.
- Demonstrated knowledge of—and commitment to—Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, with experience adapting services to be accessible and culturally responsive.
- Working knowledge of relevant legislation and applicable provincial/municipal policies, procedures, and guidelines related to children, families, privacy, and service delivery.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle is required.
Assets
Training/certification in evidence-based parenting models such as:
- Circle of Security Parenting (COS-P) facilitator training
- Triple P – Positive Parenting Program training
- OR comparable evidence-based parenting/attachment/parent coaching
- Use of database software such as Jane
Education
- Post secondary education in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Early Childhood Education, Family Studies, Psychology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
Language
- Fluency in English, oral and written required.
- Bilingualism/multilingualism an asset.
Additional Requirements
- Criminal Reference Check for the Vulnerable Sector is required.
- Ability to work some evening and weekend shifts as required.
- Maintain all required professional accreditation/credentials in good standing.
Salary $42,300 to $47,300/annual
Hours Part-time 3-year contract position (28hours/week or 4 days/week) with possibility of extension, ending March 31, 2029.
