Head of Business Operations (Remote, Volunteer, Full Time)
HEAD OF BUSINESS OPERATIONS — VOLUNTEER, FULL-TIME
Organization: Right to Live Canada
Location: Remote (United States, Canada or Europe)
Time Commitment: Full-time volunteer commitment, 35 hours per week. Duration negotiable, four month minimum.
This is a remote volunteer opportunity with Right to Live Canada, a virtual-office based Canadian non-profit start-up.
------ THE MISSION
Canada is currently facing a human rights crisis of international consequence: systemic poverty-driven euthanasia (MAiD) amongst Canadians with disabilities. Individuals are choosing to end their lives with state assistance due to being financially unable to access essentials like medical operations, supportive housing, or even food, as an outcome of the deep poverty of Canadian social disability support program design.
This systemic failure has triggered a United Nations investigation, criticism from the Canadian Human Rights Commission, and global condemnation. The issue exposes a critical failure point in the MAiD system. The safety mechanism present in MAiD — its two-assessor safeguard — presumes the existence of an external ecosystem of application-specific, referable resources that can relieve the applicant’s driving suffering and connect them to a preferable living future. That ecosystem does not exist. The gap exposes every applicant, not only those in poverty, to preventable loss of life.
Right to Live Canada is engineering a Continuity model: a service architecture designed to identify, propose, fund, and execute proposals for a preferable living future in the event of potential death.
In the context of MAiD, Continuity Service functions as the missing external referable resource that would equip assessors with the ability to identify and connect applicants to preferable living futures. Its goal is universal service and coverage.
The organization’s four core functions are:
Continuity Service — identifying and executing preferable living futures where death is otherwise being considered or approached.
Continuity Insurance — developing an insurance model that would provide a budget for Continuity Service before crisis.
Social Brokerage — productizing and brokering verified, anonymized life-supported outcomes as a financial mechanism for Continuity Service.
Research and Development — developing open-source continuity technology, including Artificial Brain Life Support.
Right to Live Canada is currently pre-pilot.
------ THE ROLE
Right to Live Canada is seeking a Head of Business Operations to help convert the organization from a founder-led startup structure into a scalable volunteer operating system.
This is not a general administrative role and it is not primarily a recruiting role. The core responsibility is to design, implement, and continuously improve how the organization works.
The Head of Business Operations will help turn the current organizational chart into a functioning operating model: departments, teams, roles, workflows, reporting lines, decision rights, task systems, dashboards, meeting rhythms, onboarding paths, and execution processes.
This role is ideal for someone who can look at a complex early-stage organization and build the machinery required for it to scale.
------ CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Organizational Operating Model
- Convert the current RTL org chart into an executable operating model.
- Define departments, sub-teams, reporting lines, interfaces, and escalation paths.
- Clarify what each function owns, what it produces, and how it interacts with other functions.
- Identify missing roles, duplicate responsibilities, structural bottlenecks, and founder-dependency risks.
- Build practical structures that allow volunteer teams to operate without constant founder intervention.
Role Architecture
- Create a role catalogue for priority volunteer positions.
- Define role missions, responsibilities, outputs, authority levels, reporting lines, required skills, and first-month deliverables.
- Help translate strategic needs into clear LinkedIn-postable role descriptions.
- Ensure roles are specific enough to recruit for and concrete enough to manage.
Workflow and Process Design
- Design how work enters, moves through, and exits each team.
- Create intake, assignment, review, escalation, and reporting workflows.
- Help build SOPs, templates, checklists, handoff rules, and repeatable execution processes.
- Define how teams coordinate asynchronously in a remote environment.
Execution Systems
- Help select, structure, and improve task-management and knowledge-management systems.
- Build or oversee dashboards for priorities, blockers, deliverables, team activity, and implementation status.
- Create operating rhythms such as weekly planning, department updates, blocker reviews, and leadership check-ins.
- Ensure meetings produce decisions, assignments, records, and follow-through.
Implementation
- Help launch the first version of the RTL operating system.
- Work with the Executive Director and department leads to implement practical structures quickly.
- Prioritize what must be built first to support rapid volunteer scaling.
- Translate strategy into weekly operating priorities.
- Keep the organization moving from concept to functioning execution.
------ WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for someone with strong operational judgment, systems thinking, and implementation ability.
Relevant backgrounds may include:
- Business Operations / BizOps
- Strategy & Operations
- Startup operations
- Operating model design
- Organizational design
- Business architecture
- Process design
- Transformation or implementation consulting
- PMO / transformation management
- COO-track operations work
- Non-profit operations at a scaling organization
The strongest candidate will be able to operate in ambiguity, impose structure without bureaucracy, and build systems that are usable by real volunteers under real workload conditions.
------ IDEAL QUALITIES
- Prior experience with start-ups.
- Strong ability to convert complexity into structure.
- Comfortable working directly with a founder in a fast-moving environment.
- Able to distinguish between a chart, a plan, and an operating system.
- Strong written communication and documentation ability.
- High tolerance for ambiguity and rapid iteration.
- Practical rather than bureaucratic.
- Capable of designing systems that are simple enough to actually be used.
- Able to build for scale while still moving quickly.
- Comfortable with mission-driven work involving disability, poverty, MAiD, social infrastructure, and institutional failure.
------ FIRST 30-DAY PRIORITIES
The first month will focus on turning RTL’s current structure into an executable operating model.
Expected initial deliverables may include:
- A revised operating model based on the current organizational chart.
- A priority role catalogue for the volunteer recruitment.
- A proposed department and team structure.
- A workflow map for how work is assigned, tracked, reviewed, and escalated.
- A recommended task-board / dashboard structure.
- A weekly operating cadence for leadership and departments.
- A 30/60/90-day implementation roadmap for scaling RTL’s internal operations.
