Head of Accounting (Remote, Volunteer, Part Time)
HEAD OF ACCOUNTING (VOLUNTEER)
Organization: Right to Live Canada
Location: Remote (Canada-wide)
Time Commitment: 12 hours per week (Flexible)
------ THE MISSION
Canada is currently facing a human rights crisis of international consequence: poverty-driven disability euthanasia (MAiD). Individuals, blocked by state-enforced poverty, are choosing to end their lives with state assistance due to being unable to access essentials such as medical procedures, supportive housing, or even food. This systemic failure has triggered a United Nations investigation, criticism from the Canadian Human Rights Commission, and global condemnation.
Right to Live Canada is engineering the only viable, system-level alternative to this crisis -- Social Brokerage. By creating a pipeline between sources of raw capital and specific one-time support plans ("Stability Mandates") for individuals in the process of applying for MAiD, the organization creates the "viable alternative" that the system itself mandates its assessors to find but does not currently provide. This represents the world's first market-based solution to poverty-driven euthanasia and the creation of a social impact credit system which exchanges philanthropic capital for verified, life-affirming outcomes, akin to carbon credits.
Right to Live Canada is currently pre-pilot.
------ THE ROLE
Right to Live Canada is seeking a Volunteer Head of Accounting to design, build, and oversee the organization’s financial tracking and accounting systems. This role exists because the organization must maintain financial discipline, transparency, and auditability from the outset, even at a pre-pilot stage.
The Head of Accounting works directly with the Founder / Executive Director and in coordination with Operations and Fundraising. The operating model is simple: leadership defines financial requirements and constraints; the Head of Accounting designs lightweight, compliant systems to track funds, expenditures, obligations, and reporting without imposing unnecessary corporate overhead.
This role is focused on correctness, clarity, and future-readiness rather than complexity.
------ RESPONSIBILITIES
--- Design and maintain the organization’s core accounting and financial tracking systems
--- Establish charts of accounts, bookkeeping structures, and financial controls appropriate for a nonprofit start-up
--- Track incoming funds, restricted and unrestricted capital, and outgoing expenditures
--- Ensure clear linkage between funds received and their intended use, including pilot and mandate-related spending
--- Support preparation of financial reports for internal leadership, donors, and future audits
--- Coordinate with Fundraising to ensure financial representations and reporting commitments are accurate
--- Maintain records required for nonprofit compliance and future CRA filings
--- Advise leadership on financial process design without over-formalizing systems
--- Prepare the organization for scale, audit, and regulatory scrutiny as pilots advance
------ WHO THIS IS FOR
This role is for someone who understands that early-stage financial systems must be correct and durable, but not overbuilt.
This role is a good fit for someone who:
--- Has experience in accounting, bookkeeping, finance, or nonprofit financial management
--- Is comfortable designing systems from first principles
--- Understands nonprofit financial compliance and reporting requirements
--- Can balance rigor with pragmatism in an early-stage environment
--- Is reliable, detail-oriented, and capable of sustained follow-through
This role is NOT a fit for individuals who require fully mature finance departments, prefer heavy enterprise systems, or are uncomfortable working in a pre-pilot organization.
------ WHAT'S IN IT FOR THE VOLUNTEER
--- Executive-level ownership of a national nonprofit accounting function
--- Direct collaboration with the Founder / Executive Director
--- Portfolio-grade experience designing financial systems from scratch
--- LinkedIn skill endorsements reflecting verified contributions
--- Formal letter of reference
--- Work that directly supports accountable, life-preserving interventions
