About The Bros Before Lows Foundation

The Bros Before Lows Foundation is a community-driven men’s health and wellness organization dedicated to encouraging open conversations, peer support and resource sharing for men experiencing physical or mental health challenges—or “lows.”

Our mission is to challenge stigma surrounding men’s mental health, encourage help-seeking and create content that helps men feel seen, supported and connected.

Talking Saves Lives.
Where Brotherhood Meets Purpose.

Role Overview

We are seeking a reliable and collaborative Volunteer Graphic Designer specializing in social media and digital content.

You will work closely with our Social Media Management team and organizational leadership to translate men’s mental health topics, awareness campaigns and community initiatives into clear, accessible and visually engaging content.

This role is best suited to someone who can:

  • Follow an established visual identity while bringing forward original ideas.
  • Complete clearly assigned design tasks within agreed-upon deadlines.
  • Communicate proactively if a deadline or project requirement cannot be met.
  • Receive feedback professionally and revise designs when required.
  • Work independently within a remote, deadline-based environment.

Key Responsibilities

Social Media Design

  • Create Instagram and Facebook carousels, quote cards, educational graphics, story templates and campaign posts.
  • Design TikTok and YouTube thumbnails, title cards and visual overlays.
  • Produce event flyers, community announcements and awareness materials.
  • Adapt designs into the correct dimensions and formats for different platforms.
  • Help turn sensitive men’s mental health topics into respectful, approachable and engaging visual content.

Digital and Web Assets

  • Design newsletter headers, calls to action and visual dividers.
  • Create website banners, blog headers and campaign landing-page graphics.
  • Format downloadable resources, guides and PDF toolkits.
  • Support occasional fundraising, sponsorship and merchandise campaigns.

Team Collaboration and Workflow

  • Work from campaign briefs, content calendars and reference materials provided by the team.
  • Use Trello to review assignments, deadlines, reference materials and project statuses.
  • Move completed assignments into the appropriate Trello section so the team can track progress.
  • Maintain active communication through Google Chat and Google Workspace.
  • Enable Trello and email notifications so assigned tasks and updates are received promptly.
  • Organize completed files appropriately in Google Drive.
  • Participate in team check-ins or scheduled meetings when reasonably available.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud, including Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign, or strong experience using Canva Pro.
  • Understanding of typography, layout, visual hierarchy, accessibility and brand consistency.
  • Knowledge of social media dimensions, aspect ratios and design practices for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube.
  • Ability to interpret a creative brief and turn it into an effective visual asset.
  • Strong attention to detail, including spelling, alignment and formatting.
  • Ability to manage personal availability and meet agreed-upon deadlines.
  • Comfortable receiving constructive feedback and making revisions.
  • Familiarity with Google Drive, Google Chat and Trello, or willingness to learn.
  • Sensitivity when creating content related to mental health, suicide prevention, stigma and personal experiences.
  • One to two years of related experience is preferred, but applicants with strong skills and relevant samples are encouraged to apply.

Reliability and Accountability

Our campaigns depend on volunteers completing interconnected assignments. Applicants must therefore be comfortable working with clear deadlines and keeping the team informed.

Applicant Work Sample

In addition to a portfolio, applicants must complete a short screening exercise. This allows us to evaluate design judgment, brand interpretation and the ability to follow a brief within a reasonable turnaround period.

Screening Assignment

Create one original social media graphic or a short sample video addressing the current men’s mental health crisis.

Possible topics include:

  • Why men may hesitate to ask for help.
  • The importance of checking in on a friend.
  • Challenging the belief that men must struggle silently.
  • Encouraging men to speak openly about a difficult period.
  • Promoting the message “Talking Saves Lives.”
  • Promoting the message “Where Brotherhood Meets Purpose.”

Before creating your sample, review The Bros Before Lows Foundation’s existing social media content to understand our:

  • Brand colours and visual elements.
  • Tone and messaging.
  • Intended audience.
  • Approach to discussing men’s mental health.

Your submission should reflect an understanding of the existing brand while demonstrating your own creativity. Please do not directly copy an existing Bros Before Lows design.

Applicants invited to complete the exercise will receive the full instructions, required format and submission deadline. The assignment will be small and time-limited. Screening samples will be used only to assess applicants and will not be published without permission.

How to Apply

Please submit:

  1. Your resume.
  2. A link to your portfolio or three to five relevant design samples.
  3. A short statement explaining why you are interested in supporting men’s mental health.
  4. Confirmation that you are willing to complete the short screening exercise.
  5. Your general availability and typical turnaround time for a social media graphic.

Applications that do not include design samples may not be considered.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted with instructions for the screening exercise and next steps.
