Graphic Designer, Volunteer

About the Pet Cancer Foundation

The Pet Cancer Foundation’s vision is to increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life of pets diagnosed with cancer. Each year, an estimated 12 million dogs and cats are diagnosed with cancer, roughly six times the rate in humans. We’re working to change that.

As our organization grows and reaches more pet families, stakeholders, and supporters, consistent, professional visual communications are essential to reinforce our brand and mission. We’re searching for a talented graphic designer to support our communications teams across multiple channels. That’s where and how you can support our mission!

About the position

The volunteer Graphic Designer is a key creative contributor to our Communications departments, responsible for producing high-quality visual assets that align with PCF’s brand guidelines and support the full range of organizational needs. You will design materials for internal use (e.g., team newsletters, presentations, training resources) and external channels (e.g., social media graphics, stakeholder/industry presentations, promotional visuals, and campaign elements). Working closely with internal stakeholders, you will ensure every graphic is on-brand, accessible, on tone, and optimized for its intended platform and audience.

We require a web link or pdf of your portfolio AND for you to leave a note with your application (acknowledging your awareness of the volunteer nature of this position). We will only contact and proceed with candidates who include both to avoid any misunderstanding.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create original graphics and layouts for internal communications, including team newsletters, all-hands presentation decks, training visuals, and internal announcements.
  • Design social media assets and campaign graphics that align with communications strategies.
  • Produce stakeholder and industry presentation materials (slides, infographics, handouts) that communicate PCF’s mission, research, and impact clearly and professionally.
  • Ensure all designs strictly adhere to PCF brand guidelines (color palette, typography, logo usage, tone, accessibility standards) and maintain visual consistency across channels.
  • Collaborate with content leads to translate concepts into compelling visuals, incorporate feedback quickly and accurately.
  • Optimize files for various formats and platforms (web, print, social, email) and maintain an organized asset library for reuse.
  • Contribute to the evolution of brand-aligned design templates and reusable elements to improve efficiency for recurring needs.
  • Provide input on visual storytelling opportunities that could enhance PCF’s communications.

About You

You’re a creative, detail-oriented designer who loves translating mission-driven messages into clean, impactful visuals. You thrive in collaborative, remote environments and take pride in delivering on-brand work that supports both internal team connection and external audience engagement. You bring:

  • 3–7 years of professional graphic design experience (nonprofit, healthcare, or mission-driven organizations preferred).
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating clean, empathetic, and professional design work across digital and presentation formats.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (especially Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) or equivalent tools (e.g., Canva).
  • Deep understanding of brand guideline implementation, typography, color theory, layout principles, and accessibility standards (e.g., alt text, contrast ratios).
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills; ability to take direction, incorporate feedback, and meet deadlines in a volunteer-led setting.
  • Organized file management and version control habits; comfort maintaining a shared asset library.
  • Genuine passion for PCF’s mission and excitement about creating visuals that educate, inspire, and support pet families.

What we provide you with

Volunteering as Graphic Designer gives you the opportunity to contribute to PCF’s visual identity during a period of rapid growth. You’ll work directly with communications leadership, see your designs used across internal newsletters, social media, stakeholder presentations, and campaigns, build a meaningful portfolio of mission-aligned work, and make a visible contribution to our efforts to advance pet cancer care.
