Position Overview
As a Board Member at Gilda’s Toronto, you play a vital role in ensuring that no one faces cancer alone. Board Members help steward an organization rooted in compassion, community, and evidence-based care—supporting people and families as they live, while living with cancer.
Gilda’s Toronto is seeking Board Members with strong strategic and critical thinking skills who are energetic, curious, and deeply aligned with our purpose of helping people achieve the greatest possible quality of life. Ideal candidates bring thoughtful leadership, sound judgment, and a collaborative spirit, and embody Gilda’s Toronto’s core values of compassion, integrity, inclusion, collaboration, and excellence.
Board Members are partners in sustaining the health and longevity of the organization by helping build meaningful relationships, raise awareness, and strengthen community support. This includes participating in fundraising and friend-raising efforts that are grounded in connection, trust, and shared commitment to our mission.
We are seeking candidates with a range of lived experiences, professional expertise, and perspectives, and encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds to apply. A variety of Board competencies are being sought, and interested candidates are invited to share how their skills and experience can support Gilda’s Toronto and the community we serve.
Specifically, we are seeking candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Fundraising: With a passion for fundraising and an established network, this individual will support the Board and the Development Committee to drive donor engagement and expand our support base. They will provide leadership in shaping fundraising strategies, building relationships with key stakeholders, and ensuring the financial sustainability of our programs.
- Public Relations: This role requires expertise in media relations to help generate awareness and amplify our message across key audiences. As a critical member of the Board and the Marketing and Communications Committee, the candidate will lead efforts to secure earned media, enhance public engagement, and align paid and earned media strategies to strengthen our brand presence.
- Healthcare: We are seeking a dedicated healthcare professional with a clinical or administrative background who understands the evolving landscape of healthcare in the GTA. This individual will bring valuable insights into how healthcare changes impact communities and will support our efforts to address cancer-related needs by leveraging their connections within the healthcare sector.
- Finance and Accounting: A finance and accounting professional with a CPA or CA designation, this individual will join the Board and the Finance Committee to provide expert financial oversight. They will play a key role in overseeing financial operations, financial reporting
Scope of Commitment
Members of the Board interact with, advise, and collaborate with the Executive Director of Gilda’s Toronto. They fundraise on behalf of the organization through various events, campaigns and sponsorship opportunities. Board Members are also donors who make a personal gift to the organization annually. Members of the Board engage and actively contribute to committees and meetings of the Board and are ambassadors for Gilda’s Toronto community.

Maximum Board Size: 20
Length of Term: 3 years, renewable twice
Board Meetings Per Year: 9 - 11
Meeting Details: Tuesdays; noon time; approximately every 6 - 8 weeks
Board Meeting Location: Virtually via Zoom with 1 - 3 meetings in person
Hourly commitment: 5 - 8 hours per month
Additional Responsibilities: Join 1-2 Board committees, including Marketing & Communications, Development, HR & Governance, Strategy, Finance & Audit committees

Our therapeutic programs and services are evidence-based and delivered by mental health professionals. We begin by identifying important concerns across key areas of patients’ lives and screen for risk of clinical depression and anxiety. This enables us to provide truly tailored, individualized support.
