🙌 About Business in the Streets (BITS)

Business in the Streets (BITS) is a registered charity that supports emerging entrepreneurs from underserved communities by providing access to entrepreneurial training, funding, mentorship, and ongoing support.

We work with young people who are often overlooked by traditional systems, helping them build businesses, generate income, and create new opportunities for themselves and their communities.

As BITS continues to grow, we are building our first in-house fundraising function to support our next stage of impact.

đź’ĽAbout the Role

We’re hiring a Fundraising Coordinator to support and strengthen BITS’ fundraising efforts.

This is a hands-on, execution-focused role. While you’ll gain exposure to strategy and high-level conversations, your day-to-day work will focus on research, writing, outreach, and systems management.

You will work closely with the Executive Director and collaborate across programs and marketing to help maintain existing funding and contribute to new revenue growth.

BITS operates with a strong foundation of recurring and multi-year funding. This role will support both maintaining that foundation and contributing to its growth.

In your first year, your work will contribute to:

  • Supporting the stewardship and renewal of $600K+ in existing funding
  • Contributing to the development of approximately $300K in new funding opportunities
  • Supporting the growth of unrestricted funding, including individual donations and major gifts
  • Strengthening the systems and processes that support long-term fundraising success

As BITS continues to expand its fundraising efforts, this role is designed to grow alongside it. There will be opportunities to take on increasing ownership over systems, relationships, and strategy, with progression based on performance, trust, and the evolving needs of the organization.

🎯Key Responsibilities

1. Grant Writing & Funding Applications

  • Research and identify relevant grant opportunities across foundations, corporations, and government sources
  • Write and submit approximately 3 grant applications per month with support from the Executive Director
  • Develop strong, tailored proposals aligned with BITS’ mission and program outcomes
  • Support the preparation of supporting materials including budgets and attachments

2. Prospecting & Pipeline Development

  • Identify and research new qualified funding prospects
  • Maintain an active pipeline across grants, major gifts, and sponsorship opportunities
  • Track outreach, status, and next steps for all prospects
  • Advance opportunities through clear actions (applications, outreach, meetings, proposals)

3. CRM & Data Management

  • Own and maintain BITS’ fundraising database (Airtable), ensuring accuracy and completeness of records
  • Track applications, deadlines, outcomes, and reporting requirements
  • Maintain organized and reliable fundraising data to support decision-making

4. Donor & Partner Support

  • Support preparation for donor meetings, sponsorship pitches, and partnership conversations
  • Contribute to strategies that drive major gifts ($2,500+) and year-end giving
  • Assist in developing decks, proposals, and outreach materials
  • Participate in meetings with funders and partners when appropriate

5. Stewardship & Reporting

  • Lead the preparation of grant reports and funder updates
  • Draft thank-you communications and impact updates
  • Work with the programs team to gather relevant data and stories
  • Ensure all reporting deadlines are met to a high standard

6. Campaigns & Special Projects

  • Support individual giving efforts and fundraising campaigns
  • Contribute to sponsorship outreach tied to events and programs
  • Support special projects (e.g., year-end campaigns, donor initiatives, alumni-driven products)
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to align messaging and outreach

🥸Who We’re Looking For

This role is best suited for someone who is looking to grow their fundraising career in the nonprofit sector. You will need to be proactive, organized, and comfortable taking ownership of your work. You’ll be expected to move things forward independently while staying closely aligned with the Executive Director and collaborating with the programs and marketing teams.

Strong writing is essential. Much of the role involves turning program impact into clear, compelling language, so you should be able to communicate effectively across different audiences and adjust your tone as needed.

You should be detail-oriented and able to manage multiple deadlines without letting things slip, especially when working across applications, reporting, and data tracking. Just as important is judgment; knowing how to assess opportunities, interpret what funders are looking for, and make thoughtful decisions in situations that aren’t always clear-cut.

The day-to-day includes a significant amount of administrative, behind-the-scenes work. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable with that and takes pride in doing it well.

Experience in fundraising and non-profits and/or graduating from of a fundraising certificate program is an asset but not required. More important is your ability to write well, think critically, and learn quickly.

đź’°Compensation & Structure

  • Salary: $52,000 annually
  • Contract: Full-time, 1-year contract (with potential for renewal based on performance and funding)
  • Benefits:
  • Health & Wellness Spending Account
  • Remote Work Allowance
  • Work Environment: Primarily remote, with occasional in-person meetings and events in Toronto

📆Hiring Process

Please submit your resume and a cover letter outlining your interest in the role and how your experience aligns with what we’re looking for.

We strongly encourage you to limit your use of AI tools (such as ChatGPT) when preparing your application & cover letter. In our experience, overuse of AI tends to flatten people’s voices and results in applications that sound identical. This makes it difficult for us to understand who you are and how you think, which are important factors in our hiring process.

Clear, thoughtful, and authentic responses will stand out far more than perfectly polished ones.
