Fieldstone Community Housing is a forming non-profit community housing provider in Nova Scotia.

Our mission is to develop affordable small-home communities that support stable housing, shared resources, environmental sustainability, and long-term community well-being.

Our first project is a rural pilot community of up to 12 units with mixed-affordability rents. Some homes will be reserved for deeply affordable housing, while others will support working adults, tradespeople, and rural workers at sustainable rents. Shared infrastructure, gardens, common space, and clear resident agreements are central to the model.

Affordable homes. Built to last.

We are currently pre-incorporation and recruiting the founding board members required to formally establish the organization as a Nova Scotia non-profit society.

As a founding director, you will help:

• Shape the society’s governing documents, including the Memorandum of Association and by-laws

• Set early policies and organizational direction

• Guide the pilot project from concept through business planning and site feasibility

• Support funder, partner, and community readiness

• Attend board meetings and participate in key decisions as the organization takes shape Founding directors will also be the initial signatories on incorporation paperwork. This is a hands-on, build-it-from-scratch role, not a seat on an already established board. We are aiming for a small board of 5–9 people with complementary strengths. We are especially looking for people with experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Finance, bookkeeping, accounting, or budgeting

• Legal, governance, contracts, or non-profit board experience

• Construction, trades, property management, planning, or development

• Community organizing, rural community work, or affordable housing

• Lived experience or strong local ties to the communities we hope to serve

• Prior board experience is welcome but not required.

• A genuine commitment to affordable housing, practical problem-solving, and willingness to learn matter most.

Founder Role and Future Staffing Fieldstone is founder-led during its pre-incorporation and startup phase. The founder is expected to serve as the initial board president to help organize the founding board, complete incorporation, and move the project toward funding readiness.

As the organization develops, Fieldstone’s goal is to secure funding for dedicated staff leadership, including a future Executive Director or project lead role. If that role becomes available, the board will follow a transparent hiring and conflict-of-interest process. If the founder is selected for a paid Executive Director role in the future, they would step down from the board before becoming staff.

This keeps governance and operations clearly separated, with the Executive Director accountable to the board.

This is an unpaid volunteer role.
