VANIER CENTRE FOR WOMEN

The Vanier Centre for Women in Milton, Ontario is a medium-sized correctional facility for female offenders serving sentences of less than two years or who have been arrested and are remanded in custody awaiting trial.

WHY WE NEED YOU

The Food Program Volunteer will support women by facilitating cooking workshops for small groups with the goal of building food skills, budgeting, and accessing food banks. All workshops are opportunities for simple hands-on food preparation, with specific menus and goals in mind. The Food Program Volunteer will create simple menus from items found in a foodbank to make one-pot meals.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Creating simple menus option for the women along with cooking demonstrations
  2. Facilitates workshops related to food, nutrition and cooking on limited budgets
  3. Provide information on accessing foodbank in local areas
  4. Support participants to set goals related to food needs
  5. Ensures that staple food items are stocked and available for programming needs
  6. Ensures that all areas are cleaned during and after meal preparation. Assist in washing dishes, pots, pans and other equipment used to prepare the meals after the workshop
  7. Monitor for pests in collaboration with Vanier

We are looking for our Food Program Volunteer to be available for one shift per week.

Kitchen program times are below:

Morning shift (9:30 - 11:30am)

Afternoon shift (1 - 4pm)

Evening shift (6:15 - 8pm)

QUALIFICATIONS

Food Handlers Certificate would be an asset

1-3 years work related experience in a food setting

Experience preparing culturally diverse meals for a multicultural environment

Experience teaching nutrition and working with women in crisis

Communication, customer service, interpersonal and problem-solving skills

Demonstrated ability to multi-task in a busy environment

Knowledge of a second language and/or culture would be an asset

Vulnerable Sector Check

HOW WE WILL SUPPORT YOU IN THIS ROLE

Volunteers will be provided with an orientation and training session. A tour of our facility along with a tour of the kitchen will be provided as well.
