Position Overview

Reporting to the Food Programs Manager, the Food Market Supervisor provides the oversight of day to day operations and resource acquisition for the Food Market located at Hope House. This position is responsible for supervising volunteers, student placements and a seasonal staff person.

The Food Market Supervisor is also responsible for the administrative tasks related to the Food Market such as purchasing supplies, improvement projects and submission of reports.

This position provides experience in running a large and fast-paced food program for a vibrant and welcoming community based food centre.

Duties and responsibilities

Food Market Operation

  • Maintains inventory of food market supplies and ensures that shelves and storage areas are properly stocked and maintained including identification of items close to expiry
  • Tracks inventory, orders, purchases, internal & external shares & donations for board report
  • Collects, tracks and analyzes key Food Market data and statistics
  • Coordinates timely, efficient & effective grocery and supply purchases, internal & external shares & donations
  • Collaborates with other agency food providers, internal staff and one-time/drop in donors to the food market
  • Maintains email responses in a timely manner
  • Works with Food Programs Manager to meet 90 day, 1 year, 3 year & 10 year organizational goals
  • Coordinates ongoing food & hygiene drives with pick-ups & deliveries in conjunction with donors & volunteers

Food Market Resources

  • Works with the volunteer coordinator to determine coverage and retention needs for Food Market volunteers
  • Regularly updates the Volunteer and Placement Coordinator about volunteers who intend to take short, medium or long term absences, including leaving.
  • Trains and oversees Food Market volunteers
  • Assists Food Program Manager with retention and team building of Food Market volunteers
  • Hires & supervises staff such as a Canada Summer Job student
  • Involved in the interviewing and day to day supervision of placement students

Health and Safety

  • Stays abreast of food and product recalls and ensures these items are removed from Hope House inventory
  • Maintains appropriate Safe Food Handling, Standard First Aid, CPR and Naloxone certifications
  • Trains, supervises, and ensures compliance of volunteers on health and safety protocols

Administrative and Other Duties

  • Works within a set budget to purchase food and other supplies
  • Provides key statistics to Food Program Manager
  • Attends staff meetings
  • Completes relevant sections of department Board Report
  • Provides input for the budget development process
  • Other duties as assigned

Direct reports

  • Supervision of volunteers & placement students
  • Supervision of a Canada Summer Jobs staff person

Compensation and Details

  • Hours: 32 hrs/week, permanent position
  • Days of work: Monday to Friday, may include some weekend work
  • Start Date: Monday July 27, 2026
  • Salary: $42,500/year
  • Health and dental benefits
