
Financial Development Officer
Citizens for Public Justice Position: Financial Development Officer
Full-time Position, located in Ottawa or remotely from Toronto, Edmonton or Montreal.
Overview:
Within the context of CPJ’s core guideline documents, the Financial Development Officer will bring expertise in fundraising, donor relations, and grant applications to inform and implement CPJ’s financial development strategy.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Financial Development Officer will work closely with Communications and Policy Staff to (a) develop a strong case for support, (b) build CPJ’s public profile and brand, and (c) explore a variety of funding sources and opportunities for sustainable financial development.
This position will involve communicating effectively and widely with a range of audiences across Canada, including CPJ members/donors, the general public, church communities and para-church organizations, and funding partners. The Financial Development Officer will have significant responsibilities for in-person and remote donor engagement, major gift fundraising, and membership recruitment and development across Canada, as well as exploring funding opportunities through grants and foundations. Some travel is to be expected.
Key Responsibilities:
Donor Relations, Stewardship & Annual Giving (30%)
- Manage and cultivate annual donors and prospects.
- Manage stewardship strategy to strengthen monthly and annual donations and convert first-time donors to repeat donors.
- Coordinate CPJ’s annual fundraising campaigns.
- Work with Communications staff to prepare digital and print appeal letters, campaign messages, and regular fundraising asks for members and CPJ’s audiences
Major Gifts, Grants & Institutional Partnerships (30%)
- Manage and cultivate a pool of major donors and prospects through in-person and virtual engagements to major donors, as well as prospective new donors.
- Build CPJ’s planned giving program and functioning as CPJ’s representative to our planned giving partner, Christian Stewardship Services.
- Prepare grant proposals to identified funding bodies.
- Develop institutional funding partnerships.
Financial Development Strategy & Reporting (20%)
- Contribute to all planning and evaluations related to financial development and branding, and present analysis and recommendations to CPJ staff.
- Collaborate with communications and development staff on a yearly tactical communications and campaigns plan.
- Serve as a resource and secretary to CPJ’s Board & Staff Financial Development Committee
Member Recruitment & Engagement (15%)
- Build CPJ’s membership recruitment and engagement strategy, including a focus on diversifying CPJ’s membership and engaging young people in particular.
- Regular in-person and remote engagement with members and donors, including liaising with CPJ staff to coordinate plans for events and staff visits across Canada.
- Represent CPJ at events and bring feedback from members and donors concerning CPJ’s profile and financial development strategy.
Systems Administration & Collaboration (5%)
- Contribute to donor base input and maintenance.
Qualifications
Alignment with CPJ Framing and Contexts
- Since this is a core position in CPJ’s work community, the successful candidate must express commitment to CPJ's faith-based vision for public policy work and agreement with CPJ’s core public justice documents and Equity and Anti-Oppression Statement.
- Familiarity with ecumenical and church structures and institutions and ability to communicate effectively across denominations and faith communities.
- Personal commitment to the advancement of public justice, leading to knowledge of how to engage the public in financial support of this work.
Financial Development Expertise:
- 3 years experience in donor relations and fundraising.
- Strong organizational and strategic planning skills with an ability to plan ahead, define measurable objectives and outcomes, and report on key performance indicators.
- Strong communicator – excellent written and oral skills.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and promote effective grant applications among foundations and other granting bodies.
- Working knowledge of Keela or similar CRM software; Mailchimp or similar communications software; Canva, Adobe or similar design software considered assets.
Other Skills
- Ability/willingness to travel and to work flexible hours.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a small team, exercising initiative and accountability within the role’s specific responsibilities.
Terms:
- Start date is January 05, 2026
- Full-time (37.5 hours/week) hybrid work. Ideally located in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal or Edmonton.
- Annual salary range of $55,000 to $62,000 depending on qualifications and experience); generous benefits package
