The opportunity

We’re the first and only 24/7 e-mental health service in the country and a global leader in innovation for youth and their well-being.

Reporting to the Group Head and EVP, Finance and Operations, the Financial Controller will oversee financial operations, ensuring accuracy and compliance for both Kids Help Phone (KHP) and Kids Help Phone Foundation (KHP Foundation). This is a hands-on role playing a crucial role in compliance and financial health. The Financial Controller is responsible for financial reporting, auditing, compliance, payroll, and financial controls. This role will collaborate with the Senior Manager, FP&A and Grants at KHP and the Executive Director, Finance & Donor Services at KHP Foundation on all financial matters impacting both KHP and KHP Foundation.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Control and Reporting

  • Lead, oversee and prepare comprehensive full-cycle accounting operations, encompassing the management of accounts payable, deferred revenue, bank and account reconciliations, and the coordination of all month-end, quarter-end and year-end closing activities for both KHP and KHP Foundation.
  • Oversee and develop internal controls, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidance and best practices as they evolve.
  • Lead the evaluation and implementation of new financial software
  • Ensure the accuracy of financial records by conducting monthly reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly and yearly financial statements for analysis by the FP&A team before finalizing.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Manager, FP&A and Grants, prepare both internal and external financial reports for KHP and KHP Foundation for approval by Group Head & EVP, Finance and Operations for KHP and by Executive Director, Finance & Donor Services for KHP Foundation
  • Oversee the monthly reporting and reconciliation of the investment portfolio in both entities.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the G/L, account structure, account mapping, financial software, user access, and vendor management.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of accounting and financial systems (Blackbaud FE, SAP Concur and Apex Connect) and enhancements or improvements.
  • Ensure the accuracy and effective stewardship of fund balances.
  • Oversee the preparation of the shared corporate resource monthly allocations and chargeback to KHP Foundation.
  • Oversee AP and payment processes.
  • Oversee revenue recognition from Government funding and grants received from KHP Foundation.
  • Ensure timely and accurate month end close.

Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Provides oversight and quality assurance to the payroll function, including weekly, monthly and yearly reviews.
  • Maintain and enhance internal financial controls and financial policies.
  • Responsible for maintaining access control to the various finance and payroll software programs.
  • Oversee the audit for KHP
  • Prepare the T3010 for KHP.
  • Oversee the preparation of T2200s for both entities.
  • Oversee the preparation of all HST/GST filings.
  • Prepare annual insurance renewals.

Risk & Governance

  • Participate in the organization’s enterprise risk management program aligned with evolving operations and strategic priorities. Act as “risk owner” on key areas within portfolio.
  • Together with the Group Head & EVP, Finance & Operations and Senior Manager, FP&A and Grants, they provide support to KHP’s Finance & Risk Committee of the Board of Directors.

Team Leadership & Talent Development

  • Oversee talent management activities including all direct hires
  • Develop and support KHP’s Finance team to enable a high-performing, client-centered professional services team
  • Mentor and develop the Finance team, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and client-centric service.
  • Set clear performance goals and KPIs for the team, aligned with department objectives
  • Fosters equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility within the portfolio.
  • Champion a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement in financial processes.

Required skills & Experience

  • Post-secondary education in finance, accounting, business administration or other related studies
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required.
  • Seven to ten years of relevant experience with at least five years in the not-for-profit sector in a senior financial role.
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting and compliance, with hands-on experience developing and enforcing internal controls aligned with regulatory frameworks such as accounting principles for not for profit, and CRA guidelines.
  • Experience managing multi-entity financial structures, including consolidation, intercompany transactions, and reporting across diverse business units or legal entities.
  • Extensive experience in deferred revenue and grant management.
  • Experienced in payroll management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Continuous learning mindset.
  • Proven experience in financial systems implementation, including requirements gathering, testing, rollout, and post-launch optimization.
  • Strong communication, technology, and management skills.
  • Strong presentation skills with experience delivering insights to large groups, including executive leadership.
  • Proven leadership abilities to manage a finance team and collaborate with other departments and across entities.
  • Familiarity with Financial Edge NXT and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

Preferred / Advantageous:

  • Experience in AP automation tools
