Program Overview: Rites of Passage Program
This position reports to the ROP Manager and is responsible for working collaboratively within the ROP team to plan and conduct Rites of Passage programming for youth participants as they progress through their Rites of Passage journey.

A sound understanding of African and African-derived history is a prerequisite for this role, including a strong knowledge of the current status of African-Canadian youth in contemporary society to the social determinants of health, education, income, criminal justice, child welfare, social services, community developments, as well as strong knowledge, experience, and familiarity with African-derived Life Cycle processes. This job requires active outreach and coordination with schools, community, recreational facilities, libraries, community organizations and natural spaces where youth gather.

What You Will Do

  • This role involves engaging these groups in the ROP process, engaging them in meaningful community service, facilitating their employment needs, and making referrals and warm connections to relevant institutions, schools, Youth Workers and community organizations (external to WoodGreen) that provide services to African-Canadian youth. In addition, this job requires the ability to:
    • Support the Outreach and engagement of African-Canadian youth, as well as post-secondary students and those out of school and work, as well as those that may be experiencing interactions with various systems, such as the criminal justice system and child welfare system.
    • Work with the Rites of Passage team, the Eldership Advisory Circle, WoodGreen Management, community members, and other youth service providers to engage WoodGreen’s Rite of Passage process as a viable option for young people of African descent to further build themselves.
    • Play a collaborative role in preparing and implementing Rites of Passage quality assurance frameworks (Process Impact Assessments, Evaluation tools, etc.).
    • Support planning and facilitation of various Rites of Passage activities.
    • Ensuring that Rites of Passage standards of service excellence are clearly understood and centred in all aspects of Rites of Passage work with African-Canadian youth and communities and internally within WoodGreen.
    • Addressing and discussing emerging issues and proposed solutions with the team and Manager and making recommendations for constant improvement.
    • Working collaboratively with Rites of Passage team to ensure a shared vision of Rites of Passage standards of service excellence
    • Actively participating in the development of WoodGreen Rites of Passage curriculum and relevant resources and working collaboratively in a team context to support Rites of Passage activities and initiatives where required.
    • Representing Rites and WoodGreen Community Services in a professional manner at all times.
    • Maintains all aspects of client and ROP related confidentiality.
    • Ensures the equity, anti-racism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved within the program.
    • Participates in regular supervisory sessions
    • Participates in regular staff and unit meetings within the team.
    • Performs other related duties as required from time to time

What You Bring to the Team

  • Undergraduate Degree in Social Work or College Diploma, Social Service Worker, or other related diploma / degree, with 3 years experience working directly with young people.
  • At least 3 years’ experience working with young people in culturally responsive programming activities. Highly developed facilitation skills and experience working with the Rites of Passage models and/or African-centred maturation models are considered strong assets for this role.
