EXPERIENCED VOLUNTEER TREASURER BOARD OF DIRECTORS

More Than Child’s Play EarlyON Child and Family Centre is currently seeking a Experienced Volunteer Treasurer to fill a vacant position within the board of directors.

The following is the Mission Statement of our organization:

"More Than Child's Play strives to meet the diverse needs of families in the local community. MTCP provides support services and information resources to parents and caregivers and children which encourage optimal social, emotional, and physical development in an atmosphere of equality, security, and harmony".

MTCP’s volunteer Board of Directors are responsible for making decisions about planning for the future, monitoring financial performance and ensuring that MTCP continues to respond to our participants’ needs so that they can continue to thrive and flourish.

Our current services are flexible to meet the needs of the daily users. The activities include: family drop in program, with a daily snack and activities, daily reading/music circle, toy library, open gym time, parent/caregiver training including workshops and support groups, clothing program, information and referrals to other services, celebrations and special events. All activities are highly interconnected and interdependent and offered free of charge.
MTCP provides a non-threatening, non-judgmental, non-intrusive and non-stigmatizing meeting place which opens up opportunities for care givers to learn new skills, to develop a circle of support; and to break out of the isolation of their homes.

Summary
We are searching for a passionate, driven and energetic individual to join The More Than Child’s Play volunteer Board of Directors as Treasurer. This position will work directly with our board, Executive Director, bookkeeper and Auditor.

Overview and Purpose:
What we look for:
The More Than Child’s Play Board of Directors strives to have a complement of directors that bring a diversity of skills, knowledge, and experience to the organization.
The following are the areas of knowledge under consideration when recruiting new directors:

  • Specific skills in governance, strategic planning, fundraising, community engagement, financial oversight, internal policy development.
  • Familiarity with diverse aspects of the sector as a participant, supplier, avid consumer or academic.
  • Experience in leading not-for-profit organizations.
  • Financial literacy.
  • Legal framework for not-for-profits.
  • Professional or personal experience related to supporting children, youth, and families dealing with grief.

As Board Treasurer, you will:

  • Ensure that accurate financial records are maintained for More Than Child Play.
  • Payroll is paid bi-weekly and remittances submitted to CRA when due,
  • Financial information is provided for the Executive Director or Board Chair when requested.
  • Up-to-date financial statements are prepared for the Board of Directors’ meetings,
  • The draft budget for the next year is prepared for review by the Finance Committee and approval by the Board of Directors,
  • The CRA annual charities filing is submitted within the six months following year-end,

Signing Officer
The Treasurer should be designated by the Board of Directors as one of the signing officers for documents including cheques and other disbursements, contracts and any other documents requiring two signatures.

General Responsibilities as a Board Member:

  • Develop and periodically review the Vision, Values, Mission, and strategic priorities of More Than Child’s Play
  • Identify the human, financial & other resources needed to deliver on the strategic priorities.
  • Ensure the necessary human and financial resources are available to achieve the strategic priorities.
  • Delegate implementation of the strategic plan to the Executive Director and review periodically to ensure plan implementation.
  • Monitor progress towards achieving the strategic priorities.
  • Oversee the responsible stewardship of financial resources and ensure the ongoing financial health of More Than Child’s Play.
  • Ensure the Board is governing the corporation effectively.
  • Ensure the organization is meeting all the legal requirements of a charity.
  • Identify risks to the corporation and ensure a plan is developed to manage the risks.

Time Commitment
It is estimated the Treasurer will be required to spend approximately 5 hours per month in carrying out the duties of the Treasurer. The Treasurer will also spend approximately 5 to 8 hours at year-end working with the contract bookkeeper, Auditor and Executive Director to ensure records are ready for review, financial reports are prepared for the Annual Meeting, and the annual CRA filing is completed.

The number of meetings that directors are expected to participate in varies. The following is an estimate of the number of meetings and events based on the first couple of years of operation.

  • Directors attend 9 board meetings per year on a monthly basis, each up to one hour. Some meetings may be held by Zoom or other electronic means.
  • Occasional committee meetings of up to one hours, may be required from time to time.
  • Periodic community events at which a director will represent the organization.
