Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP) has been organizing medical students and residents in Ontario by arranging core and elective medical rotations since 1988.
There is a need for physicians in every area of the world, particularly in rural locations. The Rural Ontario Medical Program eases burdens caused by the nationwide physician distribution problem by arranging core and elective medical rotations for medical students in Ontario.
ROMP serves 65 different communities located throughout Ontario. Not only do we coordinate rotations for medical learners in rural areas, but we also help those currently working in the medical field to connect with these learners and teach them. Services provided by ROMP are funded by the Ministry of Health with the Ministry assuming a direct funding relationship with ROMP as of December 1, 2025.

MISSION- Alleviate the burden on communities caused by the nationwide physician distribution program and create learning opportunities outside the centres and into communities.
The board of directors of ROMP is seeking an Executive Director. This is a newly created position and will lead ROMP in advancing its mission, overseeing operations, managing staff, and ensuring financial sustainability. This role requires a self-directed leader who can operate effectively in a small organization with limited administrative infrastructure.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THIS ROLE:
- Proven experience in a leadership role (minimum of 7 – 10 years) within the nonprofit sector
- Experienced with an understanding of operating in a rural community environment; an appreciation of the nuances of working in smaller communities. Candidates with lived experience in smaller communities are preferred.
- Exceptional diplomacy skills to manage external stakeholder relationships
- Strong networker to help build the ROMP profile, particularly with universities, politicians, communities, and government
- The ability to think strategically and adapt to changing circumstances
- Self-reliant and self-driven with ability to work in operations and at a strategic level
- A solid understanding of financial management and budgeting
- Ability to promote ROMP and to create buy-in; ability to inspire and motivate staff and volunteers is crucial
- Demonstrated track record of successfully driving organizational change and growth
- Board governance experience – building and supporting boards and board development
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary for engaging with stakeholders, including board members, partners, and the community
Assets:
- Previous experience working with the Government of Ontario as a transfer payment recipient
- Experience working with the Ministry of Health and other partners
Education
- University degree or equivalent leadership experience in the nonprofit sector
WHAT RURAL ONTARIO MEDICAL PROGRAM OFFERS YOU:
- Annualized compensation of $100,000 to $140,000, plus HOOPP
- Vacation – 4.5 weeks to start (including December/New Year break)
