About NABORS

Neighbours Allied for Better Opportunities in Residential Support (NABORS) is an organization of people who want the world to be a place where all people, including people with disabilities, thrive in an inclusive community. We are dedicated to supporting people with physical and developmental disabilities to have rich and full lives in community and have control over their lives.

NABORS circles of support are made up of our friends and families who freely give their time to assist us to make informed decisions, act on choices, manage our paid supports and feel safe. Members are supported to live in the homes of their choice and be fully included in the community. Circles of support are key to how NABORS supports its members.

Core funding is from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. Supported members also benefit from support funded by many other sources.

Location

Hybrid but with a commitment and the recognition of the importance of seeing supported members and circles in person. Coworking space available at Spadina and Queen. Supported members live throughout the city of Toronto. Reliable transportation or willingness to take TTC is required. Most meetings with members and circles of support occur at the supported members’ homes.

Salary

Will be discussed during the interview and based on applicants experience and expertise.

The Role

The executive director reports to the board of directors and is responsible for the day-to-day operation of NABORS. The executive director is expected have regular connection with supported members, circle members, and employees. It is critical that applicants have a desire to know members, their strengths, wishes, ways of communicating, and the challenges they experience. Supported members are actively involved in the operation of NABORS, including membership on the governing council.

Board and Council Support

The executive director supports the board in orientation of new board members, developing and implementing goals, setting agendas, and ensuring the board is updated on relevant regulations and legislation. In addition, the executive director is involved with strategy development and implementation as it pertains to the evolution of the organization. The executive director supports the governing council to remain connected and involved in the operation and direction of NABORS.

Support to Members

The executive director builds relationships with supported members and makes efforts to know the supported members (14) and their goals. The executive director attends Support Circle meetings as requested. The ED supports members through advocacy with outside resources and funders, and knowledge of effective strategies of support.

Funders and Legislation

The executive director ensures NABORS policies align with current legislation and best practices. The ED advocates with funders and community agencies for the welfare of NABORS supported members.

Financial Management

The executive director works collaboratively with the finance staff and treasurer to ensure NABORS finances remain within budget and are accurately reported to the board, funders, and auditors.

Human Resources / Personnel

As NABORS is the employer of record for the support workers, the ED oversees the processes around staff hiring, supervision, performance management, and discipline. Supported members and circles are actively involved in the day-to-day scheduling and supervising of support staff and the ED functions as coach to circles on HR matters.

Position Requirements:

  • A genuine desire to get to know supported members, circle members, and employees to be in the best position to provide the needed support and guidance.
  • Direct experience providing support to people with disabilities.
  • Understanding of concepts of circles of support, inclusion, respect, and valued social roles.
  • Understanding of or sincere desire to learn about Social Role Valorization and how this can support members in achieving the good things in life.
  • Exceptional organizational skills in order to be flexible in responding to the varied requirements of the role.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build positive relationships with all stakeholders (supported members, circle members, board, employees, funders, other service organizations).
  • An understanding of the aging processes and the compassion to support people through this period of life.
  • Professionalism and skills in positive advocacy approaches.
  • Basic understanding of Employment Standards legislation, best practices, and the willingness to continue learning as legislation changes.
  • Supervisory experience of at least 3 years.
  • Experience managing a budget in a professional capacity.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Good decision making, conflict resolution, and mediation skills.
  • Currently NABORS is requiring that employees have received 2 doses of the COVID vaccine.
