JOB SUMMARY

The primary role of the Executive Director (ED) is to provide successful leadership of CMHA-SOS according to the vision and strategic direction as set by the Board of Directors. Reporting directly to the Board, the Executive Director leads the organization and a diverse team in supporting a positive and inclusive culture based on CMHA-SOS Values. The Executive Director needs to be a strong communicator and change leader with a commitment to continuous improvement in the provision of mental health and substance use services. The Executive Director should understand the social context of mental health and substance use as well as the social determinants of health and wellbeing.

The wide range of skills and experience required of the ED include but are not limited to:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

Leadership

  • Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization
  • Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization and recommend strategies as appropriate
  • Act as a professional advisor to the Board of Directors on all aspects of the organization's activities
  • In conjunction with the Chair of the Board, act as a spokesperson for the organization
  • Conduct official correspondence on behalf of the Board as appropriate and jointly with the Board when appropriate
  • As directed, work with sub-committees that are established by the Board
  • In collaboration with the Board, update Governance policies as required
  • Take responsibility for the professional development of all staff members, ensuring relevant training, coaching and mentoring is available as appropriate
  • Be an effective team leader for all employees, including volunteers, building relationships where necessary, to achieve a unified team spirit and sense of purpose

Operational planning and management

  • Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that are aligned with the strategic direction of the organization
  • Ensure that the operation of the organization meets the expectations of its clients, Board and Funders
  • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization
  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization's programs and services to ensure the effective utilization of resources for achievement of the strategic plan
  • Ensure that the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to the organization's mission and reflect the priorities of the strategic plan
  • Set up a process to monitor the day-to-day delivery of the programs and services of the organization to maintain or improve quality
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, execution and evaluation of special projects
  • Oversee Health and Safety: Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, develop and implement safety policies, and promote a culture of safety within the organization.

Financial planning and management

  • Manage an annual budget of approximately $800,000
  • Work with staff and the Board (Finance Committee) to prepare a comprehensive budget
  • Secure adequate funding for the operation of the organization
  • Work with the Executive Assistant and Finance Committee to track variances from the budget and take appropriate action where necessary
  • Work with the Executive Assistant and Finance Committee to ensure that the appropriate financial controls are adhered to and advise the Board when action is necessary
  • Research funding sources and oversee the development of fundraising and other revenue generation plans to increase the funds of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to research, write, and submit successful grant applications, securing funding from various sources to support organizational initiatives.

Community relations/advocacy

  • Communicate with external stakeholders (government, funders, community members, partners) to keep them informed of the work of the organization and to identify changes in the community served by the organization
  • Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization
  • Liaison with Landlord regarding building maintenance
  • Liaison with CMHA BC Division and other CMHA branches

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training & Experience

  • Bachelors degree in social work, social sciences, business or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • 5 + years progressive senior leadership in social services sector or equivalent
  • Experience managing staff teams and ensuring compliance with labor laws and regulations.
  • Proven track record in overseeing the maintenance, operations, and improvements of facilities and buildings, ensuring they meet safety, regulatory, and operational standards.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles as they relate to non-profit/ voluntary organizations
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation applicable to voluntary sector organizations
  • Knowledge of human resources management
  • Knowledge of financial management
  • Knowledge of project management
