The Organization

The James Bay New Horizons Senior Centre is a vibrant, community-based nonprofit serving approximately 800 members in the James Bay neighbourhood and surrounding areas of Victoria. Our mission is to provide engaging programs, social connection, and enrichment opportunities that support the well-being and independence of older adults.

Over time, the Centre has also become an important hub for food security and community support, offering shared meals and outreach to low-income seniors through valued partnerships. We are now seeking an Executive Director who can preserve what works while modernizing how we operate, sustain, and grow our impact.

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on leadership role with clear expectations and measurable outcomes at a respected and well-loved organization. The Executive Director will provide steady operational leadership while leading a thoughtful modernization of systems, fundraising, programming, and organizational structure.

This is a full-time position, generally occurring between 8:30 and 5:00 (time off for lunch). The Board is committed to a sustainable workload. Some evening and occasional weekend work is expected, with flexibility in scheduling.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are seeking a pragmatic and collaborative leader who combines operational discipline, fundraising success, program leadership, and community sensitivity.

You bring:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of senior leadership experience, including experience at the Executive Director level or equivalent, with full accountability for organizational performance.
  • Success in managing budgets and daily financial operations
  • Demonstrated ability to critically assess budgets, and operations, and implement practical changes that improve organizational performance and program outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to increase revenue and develop sustainable funding strategies is essential, including securing major gifts, donations, sponsorships and grants as well as developing donor relationships and fundraising events
  • Success in collaborative leadership of staff teams, Board of Directors, and community partners
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage members, staff, volunteers, and partners
  • An interest in, and understanding of, the needs and realities of older adults, including those experiencing financial vulnerability

Job Description

  • Grant writing, Development, and Fundraising: ensure the financial stability of the centre
  • Financial Oversight and Accounting: develop and manage centre budget, provide oversight to accounting and audit functions and reporting requirements.
  • Staff, Board, and Membership Liaison: Ensure the wellness of existing and new centre employees, contractors, and volunteers. Manage the relationship with the Board and ensure that Board governance priorities are met. Develop strategies to assess and meet the needs of the members of the centre
  • Community Liaison: create and/or sustain robust connections with key partners and community groups
  • Program and Services Development and Oversight: Work with staff to (re)design programming which meets member needs; provide oversight and support to staff, volunteers, and community groups who deliver programs and services at the centre.

Compensation

  • STAT Holidays - Paid leave on 13 STAT Holidays per year
  • Sick Leave/Flexible Time Off – Paid leave up to a maximum of 10 days per year for sick leave or flexible personal leave (which can be carried over from year to year up to a maximum of 20 days)
  • Vacation Leave – 3 weeks per year. Increases to 4 weeks after three years, and 6 weeks after six years.
  • Salary review after 2 years
