Senior Support North Vancouver Island is seeking an experienced, mission-driven Executive Director (ED) to provide strategic and operational leadership. The ED is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of the organization. Reporting to the Board of Directors. The ED ensures the organization fulfills its mission, maintains financial sustainability, and delivers high-quality programs and services to seniors in our community.

Senior Support North Vancouver Island has been serving seniors in the Comox Valley since 1991. We are a community-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting vulnerable seniors by providing programs and services that enhance independence, dignity, and quality of life. We work collaboratively with partners and dedicated volunteers to address critical needs such as social connection, and access to essential services.
JOB SUMMARY
The Executive Director fosters a positive team culture, builds strong community and donor relationships, and serves as an ambassador for the organization. Working closely with the Board of Directors, they will guide strategic priorities and ensure the Society continues to meet the evolving needs of seniors.
The ideal candidate is a strategic nonprofit leader with strong fundraising and communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to balance daily operations with long-term planning, driven by a genuine commitment to supporting seniors.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following;
Governance & Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement a vision and strategic plan, in collaboration with the Board of Directors, to guide the organization toward its mission.
- Act as the primary liaison between staff and the Board, ensuring timely and regular reporting on finances, operations, insurance, policies, and programs.
- Coordinate and oversee all monthly and annual reporting requirements, including Board reports, AGM materials, funder reports, and grant applications.
- Attend monthly board meetings and committee meetings as a guest and maintain a positive relationship with the board.
- Support board recruitment by identifying organizational needs and leveraging professional and personal networks to identify potential board candidates.
Leadership & Program/Operational Management:
- Supervision of all employees, including hiring, training, and evaluating performance in accordance with BC Employment Standards and the Human Rights Code.
- Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all programs and services to ensure they are high-quality, meet the needs of the senior community, and comply with all relevant funding requirements.
- Foster a positive, healthy, safe work culture that values diversity and professional development.
Financial Management, Compliance & Risk Management:
- Prepare and present a timely annual budget and accurate monthly financial statements to the Board to support informed decision-making.
- Collaborate closely with the Board Treasurer and the Board on all financial planning, oversight, and reporting matters.
- Ensure strong financial management practices that comply with all relevant legislation and reporting requirements, maintaining good standing with the Societies Act, CRA, WorkSafeBC, and other regulatory bodies.
- Oversee the preparation and completion of monthly financial and fund statements, and coordinate the annual audit as required by the Board.
Fundraising and Resource Development:
- Lead the development and execution of a strategic, results-driven fundraising plan with clear annual revenue targets aligned with the organization’s overall strategic priorities.
- Identify and pursue grant opportunities, prepare compelling proposals, and provide timely reporting on outcomes and impact.
- Oversee and actively support all fundraising initiatives, including donor cultivation and stewardship, as well as fundraising events and campaigns, to ensure sustainable funding for operations and growth.
- Develop, grow, and steward a strong donor base, implementing meaningful recognition strategies to foster long-term engagement and support.
Community Engagement and Public Relations:
- Serve as the public face and primary spokesperson for the organization, building and maintaining strong relationships with community groups, government agencies, funders, and other stakeholders to enhance the organization's profile.
- Attend events and participate in community activities/community outreach to establish personal and foundation profile, and to build networks.
- Ensure that all internal and external communication follows organizational guidelines and are maintained and current.
- Advocate for improved services and supports for seniors in our service area.
Duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time and adapt as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in one of the following: Business Administration, Social Human Sciences or another relevant field.
- Five years in senior nonprofit management, with experience supervising and/or coordinating the work of volunteers and/ staff.
- Full competency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and SharePoint.
- Possession of a Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle with $3M in automobile liability insurance.
- A satisfactory BC Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Check must be agreed to and will be completed by SSNVI at the time of hiring.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES AND EXPECTATIONS
- Strong leadership abilities –comfortable leading a staff up to eight, performing annual reviews and check-ins.
- Fund development & revenue generation –knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to nonprofit sector. Demonstrated success in donor stewardship, grant writing, and revenue generation.
- Ability to write funding proposals, manage, and report on grant funding.
- Strong and effective written and oral communication skills (public speaking, presentations).
- Ability to interface and engage with diverse volunteer and donor groups.
- Budget & financial accountability – solid, hands-on budget management skills, including preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting.
- Experience and/or understanding in supporting seniors and/or people living with disabilities and other vulnerabilities.
- Ability to work independently and as a team leader.
- Talent for developing strong interpersonal relationships and consensus building approach.
- As the leader of a nonprofit team, the Executive Director is expected to attend and support agency fund development and outreach events.
JOB DETAILS
Position Type: Salaried, full-time, permanent position with an expectation of a 35 hrs/week
Compensation: $75,000 - $80,000 (commensurate with experience)
Benefits: Four weeks of annual vacation time (pro-rated), three weeks (pro-rated, non-cumulative) annual sick time.
Location: SSNVI provides services from Bowser to north of Campbell River, therefore the ED should commute as needed and within the travel budget. The primary office can be in either the Comox Valley or Campbell River.
