Position Summary
The Îyahrhe Nakoda Food Bank Society (INFBS) is seeking an experienced individual to provide leadership, strategic vision and direction to the organization in the role of Executive Director. The Executive Director serves as the face of the INFBS, working closely with the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, donors, government agencies, and other organizations to effectively deliver food access programs and food security initiatives in the communities of Mînî Thnî, Big Horn and Eden Valley.
Description
The Executive Director of the Îyahrhe Nakoda Food Bank Society is responsible for providing strategic leadership, overseeing the day-to-day operations, and advancing the organization’s mission and vision. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director ensures that the organization meets its goals through fiscal responsibility, sound management, and stakeholder/partnership engagement.
Board Relations & Governance
- Support the Board of Directors in fulfilling its governance responsibilities
- Prepare monthly board meeting materials in collaboration with the Chair and attend all meetings
- Serve as Ex-Officio on board committees
- Provide monthly updates and strategic guidance to the board on organizational performance, opportunities, and challenges
- Support board engagement, development, and succession planning
Community & Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the official spokesperson of the Society in the community and with media
- Represent INFBS at events, meetings, and speaking engagements to enhance the INFBS brand
- Support communication strategies to promote the organization’s mission and vision
Financial Management & Compliance
- Prepare and manage annual operating and fundraising budget
- Work with the Treasurer to oversee budgeting, financial planning, reporting and risk management
- Ensure accurate financial records are maintained and appropriate controls are in place to mitigate risk
- Ensure the Society remains compliant with all relevant regulatory and ethical standards for registered charities in Alberta/Canada
- Oversee accurate financial record-keeping, including payment processing, invoicing, coding, and account reconciliation
Fund Development & Communications
- Lead and implement resource development strategies, including grants, individual gifts, corporate giving, sponsorships, events and fundraising campaigns
- Ensure appropriate systems are in place for donor cultivation, solicitation, recognition and stewardship
- Actively source grant opportunities, prepare compelling proposals and budgets, ensure timely submission, and oversee grant management and reporting requirements
- Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization with stakeholders, partners, funders, media, and the public
- Oversee marketing and communications to enhance visibility and community engagement
- Oversee the organization’s website and social media channels
- Ensure consistency and alignment of all social media channels and the INFBS website with the organization’s goals and branding
- Create and distribute newsletters and other communications for members
Leadership & Operations
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Food Bank
- Provide visionary and strategic leadership to ensure alignment with the organization’s mission, values, and long-term goals
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive organizational culture
- Lead the development, implementation, and regular review of organizational policies to ensure they remain current, relevant, and aligned with legal and sector standards
- Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services, ensuring they are accessible, sustainable, in meeting community needs
- Guide the development of any new programs and initiatives, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission, objectives and strategic priorities
- Build and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders and partners
People Management
- Oversee the hiring, onboarding, training and performance of staff
- Conduct annual performance reviews and implement work plans and goal setting
- Provide oversight and management of the volunteer program including recruitment, training, engagement, appreciation, and evaluation
- Foster a positive, supportive, and inclusive work culture through ongoing leadership and mentorship
- Ensure compliance with HR policies and the AB Employment Standards Act
Regulatory Compliance
- Conduct organizational risk assessments and implement risk management strategies
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation and sector standards, including but not limited to Alberta Employment Standards Act, Alberta Societies Act, Canada Revenue Agency, Food Banks Canada Standards of Excellence, and Food Safe guidelines
- Maintain and regularly update the organization’s Emergency Response Plan
- Ensure timely filing of all regulatory reports
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience working with First Nations is an asset
- Post secondary degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Comprehensive understanding of food insecurity and systemic inequity
- Three to five years of leadership experience in a nonprofit, public or social enterprise sectors
- Proven track record in fund development and grant writing
- Financial management, strategic planning and board governance experience
- Strong written, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across diverse audiences and settings
- Excellent relationship builder, able to connect with community members and develop partnerships with collaborators
- Exceptional interpersonal communication and relationship building skills
- Ability to work independently and remain composed under pressure, while successfully managing projects and competing deadlines, including effectively managing crisis or emergency situations
- Proficient in the use of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) donor databases and fundraising platforms
- Must have a valid Driver’s Licence
- A current Vulnerable Sector and Police Information Check is required
