About the BC Health Coalition
The BC Health Coalition is a Vancouver-based non-profit organization, situated on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱ wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səl̓ilw̓ ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh).
The BC Health Coalition is a non-partisan organization with over 800,000 members that defends and advocates for a strong public health care system in BC and across Canada. The Coalition is made up of community-based organizations and individuals that promote evidence-based improvements to our public health care system, stimulates public engagement and education on health care issues and drives positive change to our health care system through campaigns across the province and partnering with national organizations.
Governance
The Executive Director reports to the Coalition’s Steering Committee. The Steering Committee is active in the Coalition’s governance and endeavours to build consensus. The Steering Committee is a collective of community organizations (including health care providers, policy analysts, community organizers and advocacy groups) and trade unions.
The Executive Director, working with the Steering Committee and staff, guides the process of developing an organizational plan and strategic directions for the BCHC. Once established, the Executive Director oversees and provides organizational support for the implementation of the plan.
The Executive Director supports the confidential work of the Administrative, Finance and Steering Committees.
About the Role
This is a senior leadership role. In addition to working with the Steering Committee and leading strategic directions, the Executive Director must foster a strong and cooperative relationship with community and labour partners. The Executive Director will strive to maintain a collaborative relationship with government, health authorities, non-profit organizations, and other decision makers as we build support for maintaining the principles set out in the Canada Health Act.
The Executive Director is responsible for fundraising, oversees all BCHC’s campaigns, manages and supervises a small staff, and makes recommendations to the Coalition’s Administrative Committee on all personnel and labour relations matters. They are also responsible for overseeing and directing health policy research as necessary, consistent with the organizational priorities.
The Executive Director is the lead spokesperson for the BCHC and is responsible for raising the Coalition’s profile.
Qualifications
- The Executive Director must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and training in a related field.
- A minimum of 3-years experience working in a leadership role with a non-profit, government, or labour organization. The Executive Director must have experience working with Boards.
- A minimum of 3 years experience managing staff in a campaign and/or advocacy role and knowledge of and experience with the tools necessary to perform that work.
- Demonstrated experience of non-profit fiscal management and fund-raising.
- Experience, awareness and critical analysis of the public health care system as it relates to the social determinants of health, including the threat of privatized healthcare.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate in a respectful and cooperative manner with Coalition members, staff, volunteers, government, and other public bodies including the media.
- Demonstrated experience navigating human resources through a DEI lens and in a unionized environment.
Terms and Conditions
- Full-time. Some evening and weekend work required. Candidates must have a Class 5 driver’s licence.
- The BC Health Coalition maintains an office in Vancouver and the Executive Director is expected to keep regular office hours to ensure effective connection and communication with staff and committee members. There is some ability to work remotely.
