
Executive Director
Background:
Everywoman’s Health Centre (EWHC) is an abortion and sexual health clinic operating in East Vancouver. In early 2027 EWHC plans to move to a new, larger, central Vancouver location and expand services to include procedural abortions, medical abortions, contraceptive services including IUDs and implants, sexual health services, and vasectomy.
In preparation for this expansion, EWHC is recruiting leadership positions (non-union) to guide the organization through the transition and run the organization in the new location.
EWHC is currently accepting applications for the position of Executive Director. This full-time permanent position is the most senior staff person and reports to the Board of Directors.
Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership
- Collaborates with the Board to establish, implement, and monitor the strategic plan, ensuring the operating plan, budget, policies, staff, and priorities are aligned with the core mission
- Leads organizational excellence with attention to internal infrastructure and the mission,
- Recommending new/enhanced services and programs as necessary
- Pro-actively develops a current understanding of issues surrounding sexual health and abortion services in North America and, in particular, Canada
- Pro-actively advocates for EWHC and its services
- Organizes and attends all Board/Task Force meetings and retreats including setting the agenda in conjunction with the Board president, presenting reports, taking minutes, and implementing Board decisions
- Immediately informs the Board of any significant security, legal or other risk issues
2. Strategic Communications and Stakeholder Relations
- Conducts strategic internal and external communications, participating in meetings and liaising with key stakeholders
- Maintains strong working relationships with our main funder, Vancouver Coastal Health, other clinics and healthcare programs, national organizations, political representatives, and others
- Liaises with EWHC's legal advisor, giving instruction where appropriate or with Board direction as necessary (must be prepared to testify in court when necessary)
- Represents EWHC in the media, through conference or other presentations, and in other venues as appropriate
3. Operational and Human Resources Leadership
- Develops and ensures an effective, respectful, and collaborative working environment that retains and attracts a highly effective team
- Provides leadership and operational performance management to Operations Manager, nurses and counsellors
- Develops appropriate operational policies/procedures and ensures effective people practices are implemented (e.g., performance evaluation, hiring, termination, etc.), obtaining Board approval as required
- Participates in and facilitates union negotiations as required for the betterment of the organization
- Chairs Quality Council meetings including setting the agenda and preparing supporting materials
- Leads contractual relationship with VCH including communications, implementation, report of deliverables and financial submissions
- Manages the facilities including leasing and space planning
- Ensures the clinic is appropriately equipped and maintained
- Collaborates with the Medical Director on CPSBC accreditation processes
- Follow-up on patient complaints by leading investigation and coordinating the responses to complaints
4. Financial Integrity and Revenue Development
- Acts as the key oversight and financial control of the organization, ensuring fiscal responsibility and adherence to the approved budget
- Supervises the bookkeeper, ensuring financial controls are in place
- Prepares the annual budget for review by the finance Task Force and presentation to and approval of the Board
- Seeks and develops funding sources and opportunities, and negotiates with the funder to secure adequate funding for clinic operations
- Reviews monthly financial information prepared by the bookkeeper and reports them to the Board
5. Risk Mitigation
- Oversees the identification and mitigation of risks (which can include operational, financial, and reputational risks among others)
- Ensures the provision of adequate insurance for Directors’ Liability, facility and properties, staff coverage and other, as required
- Ensures that organizational practices are in compliance with all regulatory and legal standards
Qualifications:
1. Education and Experience
- Post-secondary degree in health administration, business, or a related discipline; Master’s
- preferred
- 10-15 years of experience in a leadership position; preferably in a health care and/or non-profit environment
- Experience working with a governance Board
- Previous experience in strategic, operational and business planning, including developing business cases and performing financial analyses
- Previous experience with and knowledge of sexual and reproductive health issues preferred
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and ability to prioritize competing demands
- Strong technology skills and experience
- Strong human resources skills; experience in a unionized environment preferred
- Excellent communication skills: ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

Working Conditions:
The Executive Director is a full-time position within a strong values-based organization. This position requires a high level of team collaboration and transparency, yet also requires significant autonomy and ability to move forward effectively on decisions. The work can involve moderate exposure to some disagreeable conditions (e.g., exposure to adverse environmental characteristics, requirement for personal sacrifice and exposure to confrontation situations).
