Since 1978, 1Up Victoria Single Parent Resource Centre (1Up) has been dedicated to supporting the diverse and evolving needs of single parent families in the Greater Victoria area. As a registered charitable organization, we provide practical resources, growth opportunities, and a sense of hope to over 1,800 families each year. Guided by skilled staff and dedicated volunteers, our strength-based, trauma-informed programs create foundations for personal and community growth in a welcoming, non-judgmental environment. We believe in meeting each family where they are, embracing individual differences, and adapting to changing needs. Summary & Key Functions
As the Executive Director of 1Up Victoria Single Parent Resource Centre, you will lead with vision, purpose, and heart - guiding an organization dedicated to empowering single parents and their children. Reporting to the Board of Directors, you will champion strategic growth, ensure financial sustainability, and expand community impact through thoughtful planning and effective operations. Your strong financial literacy and business acumen will drive sound budgeting, forecasting, and risk management, while your proven fundraising expertise will open doors to new partnerships, grants, and revenue opportunities. You will inspire and support a talented team, foster a culture of collaboration and inclusion, and serve as the organization’s lead ambassador - building relationships, strengthening visibility, and advancing 1Up’s mission with confidence and integrity.
As the Executive Director, you will be responsible for these key functions:
Strategic & Operational Leadership
- Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of the organization’s strategic plan in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
- Identify opportunities for innovation, program expansion, and service improvement.
- Establish and track organizational success metrics: evaluate performance and impact regularly.
Financial Stewardship & Risk Management
- Ensure strong financial oversight, including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and review preparation.
- Implement effective internal controls and best practices in financial management.
- Monitor financial performance and maintain long-term sustainability.
Fundraising, Outreach, and Stakeholder Engagement
- Develop, lead, and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy to support current operations and future growth.
- Research funding sources and write proposals to secure government and/or private sector funds.
- Cultivate relationships with donors, funders, partners, and community stakeholders.
- Represent 1Up at public events, with the media, and in strategic partnerships.
People & Culture Leadership
- Build and sustain a positive, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture.
- Provide professional development, performance feedback, and clear role expectations.
- Assess and support volunteer engagement across programs.
Governance & Board Relations
- Serve as the liaison between the Board of Directors and the work of the organization, ensuring strong communication and alignment on strategic goals.
- Foster effective teamwork between the Board and the Executive Director by demonstrating proactivity, forward thinking, and responsiveness to issues, concerns, opportunities, and queries raised by the Board of Directors.
- Actively alert Board to any urgent or emergent issues.
Your Toolkit Includes
- Five-seven years of leadership experience in the non-profit or social services sector, with demonstrated success in guiding and developing a team of employees and volunteers.
- Post-secondary education in non-profit management, social work, finance or a related field is an asset; a combination of experience and education would be considered.
- Proven success with developing grant proposals, managing funding agreements, and reporting on outcomes.
- Strong financial literacy and business acumen, including knowledge of budgeting best practices, understanding of the basics of tax, payroll, financial reporting, an in-depth understanding of corporate finance and performance measurement and general bookkeeping principles.
- Strong understanding of strategic planning and execution within a non-profit or social services environment.
- Skilled in building and maintaining collaborative relationships with funders, donors, and community partners.
- Comfort and credibility representing an organization in public and media forums.
- Proactive approach to problem-solving with strong decision-making capability, using research and data to develop evidence-based decisions and recommendations.
- High level of integrity, emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and commitment to personal growth and development, striving for the highest attainable standard of excellence.
This full-time 40-hours per week position, offers the opportunity for a hybrid work environment, with occasional travel within the Greater Victoria region, requiring the successful candidate to be located in Victoria, BC. Offering a competitive salary, this opportunity also includes a comprehensive compensation package.
