Lead the Next Generation of Leaders – Become the Executive Director of 4-H BC
Are you a visionary leader with a passion for youth development, community building, and agriculture? 4-H BC is seeking an inspiring and strategic Executive Director to lead the new 2025 – 2028 Strategic Plan and mission to empower young people with life and career skills and agricultural awareness while inspiring, education, and supporting youth through hands-on learning.
For over a century, 4-H BC, a non-profit organization operating as a charity, has been shaping future leaders by fostering curiosity, responsibility, and community spirit in youth across the province in cohesive partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture. As our Executive Director, you will lead a team of 4 – 5 staff and guide this legacy into the future—collaborating with volunteers, partners, families, alumni and sponsors to grow our impact and ensure 4-H BC continues to thrive as a cornerstone of youth development, reaching young people ages 6 – 21 in both rural and urban communities.
Reporting to and working together with the Provincial Council, or Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for providing leadership to 4-H’s vision and mission and leading in operational management. The Executive Director maintains a positive image of 4-H BC and ensures effective liaison with 4-H regions and districts throughout the province, government, and all funding agencies.

Roles and Responsibilities
A. Governance and Board Liaison
- Provide information, advice, and counsel to the President of the Board, Board Committees, and the Board of Directors in the creation of policies, programs, and strategic direction of 4-H BC.
- Foster effective collaboration and communication with the Board.
- Keep the Board informed through established mechanisms to monitor and report performance progress on objectives; address problems where objectives are not being met; and advise on risks and potential risks.
- Collaborate and support the 4-H BC Foundation Council, as appropriate.
- Responsible for maintaining 4-H Canada Accreditation requirements and reporting.
B. Leadership and Operations
- Oversee administrative functioning of 4-H BC.
- Develop goals and objectives cascading from the strategic plan, delivering on initiatives designed to support “Learn To Do By Doing” in a safe, inclusive, and fun environment
- Maintain a cohesive relationship with the BC Ministry of Agriculture, leading effective alignment to the Memorandum of Understanding with Ministry of Agriculture-Youth Development Programs staff on 4-H BC educational program and project initiatives.
- Engage with other strategic partners and represent 4-H BC to 4-H Canada and other provincial organizations, including industry associations.
- Effectively support, and coordinate resources for, clubs, districts and regions.
- Serve as a mediator in conflict management processes as needed or appoint a suitable thirdparty mediator.
- Maintain insurance coverage and manage incident reports.
C. Fundraising and Financial Management
- Responsible for the financial management of 4-H BC, including the development and implementation of the annual budget and providing monthly financial reports to the Executive/Financial Committee.
- Responsible for Federal and Provincial Government funding initiatives, working closely with 4-H Canada (Federal) and the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Foods, Youth Development Program Manager.
- Lead development and implementation of the annual fund development plan, working closely with the Fund Development Coordinator, covering corporate sponsorships, donations and grants, including BC Gaming.
- Assure required filings for BC Societies and CRA are submitted in a timely manner.
D. People Resourcing and HR Management
- Develop people resourcing plans and recruit skilled individuals, for regular, temporary, contractor, and summer/seasonal roles.
- Effectively and fairly manage staff, including an Administrative Coordinator, Fund Development Coordinator, Program Coordinator, and a Communications and Marketing Coordinator, assigning and directing work, providing feedback and support for success, appraising performance, recognizing contributions, identifying training opportunities, promoting, and disciplining when required.
- Support the assessment and evolution of 4-H BC’s organizational structure and work-model, exploring the potential for hybrid or remote operations, to address changing organizational needs and opportunities.
E. Communication
- Oversee external communication going to members, leaders and other interest holders including the general public, including the 4-H BC Annual Report, website, social media and newsletter.
- Lead development of the Marketing, Recruitment and Retention plan working closely with the Communications Coordinator and Fund Development Coordinator.
- Acts as the primary media spokesperson, with support from the Board as required.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Organizational Leadership & Management – relevant degree or diploma, such as in business management, with five years senior leadership experience, preferably in a non-profit organization and/or the work of 4-H BC. Experience working with a non-profit Board of Directors and demonstrated collaborative leadership approach an asset.
- Passion for Youth Development – Genuine enthusiasm for the 4-H program and a commitment to fostering positive experiences for youth. Direct experience as a 4-H program participant, family, or leader considered an asset.
- Financial Management – Strong budgeting, financial oversight, and fiscal responsibility. Sound knowledge of financial management principles and reporting requirements.
- Grant Writing & Fund Development – Solid fund development skills, including development of varied revenue development strategies and proven experience in writing successful grant applications.
- Human Resource Management – Demonstrated experience in human resources management, including experience in staff supervision, development, and effectively, respectfully, and fairly managing staff.
- Partnership & Relationship Management – Strong relationship building and influencing skills with experience building and maintaining strong connections with youth, families, staff, partners, funders, sponsors, industry associations, and other interest holders.
- Public Engagement & Advocacy – Willingness to actively represent and promote the 4-H program within the community and beyond.
- Strategic Approach, Planning & Implementation – Ability to assimilate information, ideas, data, while weighing challenges and opportunities to arrive at solid recommendations, decisions, and solutions to problems. Capability to activate a strategic plan, develop actionable work plans, and align organizational goals with long-term vision.
- Effective Communication – Strong verbal, written, and visual communication skills to engage diverse audiences, with the ability to develop and present concise reports, messaging, presentations, and act as the media spokesperson.
- Conflict Resolution & Problem-Solving – Sound knowledge of conflict management practices including facilitation and mediation with experience mediating disputes and fostering a collaborative work environment.
- Technology – Ability to engage effectively through online meetings and sound skills with MS Office applications.
Work conditions
This is a permanent, full-time (37.5 hours per week) position, currently based out of the 4-H BC office in
Vernon, BC on the lands of the Secwepemcúl’ecw (Secwépemc) and Syilx (Okanagan) peoples. The new Executive Director will be required in-person during the onboarding phase, with the option to shift to a hybrid work-model as onboarding progresses and the new ED assesses the possibility of alternative team work-arrangements, including the possibility of a fully remote office in the future. Applicants expecting to work fully remotely from the outset will not be considered.
Additionally, the position will involve some evening, weekend, overtime hours, when needed, to
accommodate work activities, events, presentations or representing the organization at events around the Province.
The salary range for the position is $75,000 - $95,000, with an expected hiring range of $75,000 - $85,000, depending on experience.
All applicants must have a valid BC Driver’s license and be able to travel throughout BC. Hiring will be subject to satisfactory completion of a criminal record check for the vulnerable sector and BC Driver’s Abstract is required.
