Restoring Hope Ministries (RHM) is a Canadian registered charity that has been operating since 2012. Our mission is to love and serve the youth and young adults, aged 16 to 24, in the Ottawa area who are experiencing homelessness, are marginalized, and/or exploited. We do this by providing an emergency overnight shelter in the downtown core, an evening drop-in program, warm meals, snacks, and counseling.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Be familiar with, and adhere to, RHM’s mandate, mission, vision, ethics, organizational structure, policies and procedures;
  • Ensure that the shelter runs smoothly during the shift by providing supervision and guidance to other front line workers and/or volunteers;
  • Work in a respectful and cooperative manner with all clients, staff and volunteers;
  • Works within skill level at all times and seeks support from other staff as needed;
  • Maintains Demonstrates compassion in the administration of policies and procedures;
  • Support the efforts of all clients, co-workers and volunteers;
  • Monitors the activities of the clients;
  • Record statistical data of clientele as required;
  • Accurately record incidents using appropriate methods;
  • Liaise with referral sources and other external agencies as needed with prior coordination from the Executive Director;
  • Ensures ongoing enforcement of policies and handles disciplinary actions when youth are non-compliant;
  • Provide leadership to all staff and volunteers by actively seeking opportunities to lead by example;
  • Make decisions regarding when the Director, the police, and or the paramedics need to be called for assistance during a crisis;
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings;
  • Alert the RHM’s Executive Director promptly of any extraordinary circumstances, including legal or ethical issues that may arise; and,

Other duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications

  • Background that includes relevant training, education and or/experience. Direct shelter front line training and/or experience preferred;
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality;
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to interact in a non-judgmental, non-blaming way are essential;
  • Must be able to work flexible hours and be a self-starter;
  • Able to provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Check;
  • Strong ability to manage stress and organize workload;
  • Understands and maintain clientele/worker boundaries;
  • Adaptability to change and frequent interruptions;
  • Team oriented and able to take initiative;
  • Willingness to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds;
  • Ability to listen attentively;
  • Plan to Protect (current is an asset);
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR/AED training (current is an asset);
  • Non-Violent Crisis Training or ASIST training (asset).

Working conditions

  • Be able to work flexible schedules;
  • Intermittent physical activity involving various activities: walking, standing, sitting, bending, lifting, etc.;
  • Work will be conducted with clients that may have hygiene concerns;
  • Services will be provided to individuals with many different abilities, backgrounds, health statuses and lifestyles.
