Education Counsellor

Job Description

The Education Counsellor reports to the Executive Director. The roles and responsibilities of the Education Counsellor include:

Education Program

  • Sharing responsibility for intake and assessment of new learners
  • Maintaining a program for monitoring and supporting tutor/learner matches
  • Assessing skills and developing a learning plan for new learners
  • Establishing tutor/learner matches
  • Entering learner information in the Ministry database and maintaining active case status
  • Supporting each match by monthly contacts and match visits when necessary and actively communicating with volunteer tutors
  • Assessing learners’ progress
  • Maintaining files, progress notes, exit reports for each learner
  • Making appropriate referrals of learners to other literacy programs and/or employment or social service organizations when necessary
  • Sharing responsibility for recruiting, screening and training of volunteer tutors
  • Sharing responsibility for designing, organizing, and conducting periodic workshops for tutors
  • Researching new materials for the Resource Library
  • Encouraging regular submissions from learners for The Reader, PWC’s quarterly newsletter
  • Creating The Reader by compiling learner-writings, inserting graphics, providing seasonal content
  • Updating PWC’s website, managing Google Ad Grant
  • Creating social media content
  • Staying informed of the requirements of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development
  • Assisting in administrative duties that support ongoing operations

The Educational Counsellor’s roles and responsibilities may include:

Networking

  • Attending training and professional development events
  • Occasional participation in local literacy network meetings
  • Maintaining links with other literacy programs in the region with regard to program development
  • Investigating new outreach/communication opportunities and participation as needed
  • Assisting the ED in outreach to potential sponsors and donors

Other

  • Occasional attendance at PWC evening or weekend events not related to tutor training or workshops
  • Occasional participation in Heartwood House fundraising events (once or twice a year)
  • Occasional attendance at monthly members’ meetings of Heartwood House

Required degree level

  • Experienced (Non Manager)
