
Editor (volunteer)
The Editor (volunteer) is a member of the Operational Team and reports to the Director of Communications. The Editor supports the development and submission of written content for the UNACTO Journal and provides editorial support to the Director of Communications. Primary duties include copyediting and proofreading and supporting the execution of UNACTO’s content strategy.

Note: This position is intended to support the 2025–2026 season, with the option to renew each year.
Key Areas of Responsibility
- Copyediting and publishing content by UNACTO’s team of writers. This includes (re)writing, editing and proofreading (spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax), correcting usage, ensuring organizational voice, fact-checking, and developing and correcting charts and tables
- Ensuring that content aligns with the UNACTO brand, values and mission
- Providing editorial guidance and constructive feedback to writers
- Adhering to UNACTO’s editorial and technical guidelines
- Brainstorming new stories, series, concepts, themes and formats as needed
- Populating the journal calendar in consultation with the Director of Communications and contributing writers
- Other relevant duties as required
Desired Skills
- A genuine interest in the United Nations mission and SDGs
- Previous experience as a copyeditor in a publishing setting is highly desirable
- Experience writing and copyediting documents on economic and policy issues, sustainability issues, environment and climate change, healthcare and governance is desirable
- A wide range of editorial experience is desirable, e.g., annual reports, beneficiary stories, newsletters, op-eds, web and social media content and press releases
- Excellent research skills and experience with synthesizing information into accessible forms
- A post-secondary diploma in journalism, English or a related field (in progress or completed) or an equivalent combination of academic and professional experience
- Exceptional written and oral communication and a passion for storytelling and creating compelling content
- Attention to detail and strong editorial judgement
- Adherence to UNACTO’s house style guide and publication policies
- An ability to work independently with little or no daily supervision
- Strong interpersonal skills and a positive, flexible, team-oriented and responsive attitude to open communication
- Time management skills—prioritizing, scheduling, adapting—and a commitment to deadlines
- Familiarity with the Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Trello, Slack and Zoom
