Dog Volunteer Manager

Love dogs? Great with people? Join us as the Dog Volunteer Manager and help build a strong, passionate community of volunteers who care for our shelter dogs. You’ll lead and support a small team of coordinators, improve volunteer systems, and ensure every volunteer feels welcomed, supported, and set up for success.

Reports to: Senior Dog Manager

What You’ll Do:

Lead & Support Our Volunteer Team

  • Oversee and mentor volunteer coordinators (training, scheduling, and recruitment).
  • Recruit, screen, and onboard new dog team volunteers.
  • Ensure volunteers understand our values, policies, and procedures.

Keep Things Running Smoothly

  • Maintain shift coverage by managing volunteer schedules and floaters.
  • Monitor shelter needs and adjust staffing plans as needed.
  • Ensure safety and consistency in how we care for our dogs.

Make Volunteering a Great Experience

  • Help develop and deliver engaging orientation and training programs.
  • Keep volunteers connected with regular updates and communications.
  • Provide feedback, recognize contributions, and address concerns with care.

Improve & Grow Our Program

  • Work with the Dog Team to improve systems and processes.
  • Track key metrics like volunteer retention, training completion, and shift coverage.

Time Commitment:

This role requires a commitment of approximately 10-15 hours per week, with flexibility to work remotely and occasionally on-site at our Etobicoke shelter. Some evening or weekend availability may be needed for team meetings or events.

Qualifications:

To thrive in this role, you’ll need:

  • At least 3 years of management experience (volunteer or employee), including team leadership, performance management, and conflict resolution.
  • Experience recruiting, training, and mentoring team members.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Confidence in decision-making and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Comfort working independently in a self-directed role, as well as collaboratively with others.
  • A love for dogs and belief in the power of community

Non-profit or shelter experience is a plus, but not required — we’re looking for someone who’s people-focused, solution-oriented, and passionate about helping dogs.

Perks: Flexible schedule, a passionate team, and lots of wagging tails

If you’re passionate about dogs, enjoy working with people, and are ready to take on a greater leadership role, we’d love to hear from you.
