Legal Volunteer: Document Review & Governance Support

Position type: Volunteer (Advisory and support role; does not replace external legal counsel).
Time Commitment: Approximately 5 hours per week, flexible.
Purpose of the Role: To support the Universal Limbs Foundation in managing day-to-day legal and governance matters by reviewing internal documents, ensuring basic compliance, and helping streamline organizational policies. This volunteer role complements our external legal counsel and helps strengthen the nonprofit’s daily legal and administrative efficiency.

K E Y R E S P O N S I B I L I T I E S :

Legal Document Review:

  • Review internal agreements, partnership templates, waivers, and general policies.
  • Provide plain-language feedback to help ensure clarity and compliance with Canadian nonprofit standards.
  • Assist in organizing and maintaining basic legal records and documentation.

Governance Support:

  • Help refine governance documents, such as bylaws, policies, or Board templates.
  • Support leadership in documenting decisions and ensuring simple, sound governance practices.
  • Assist in preparing materials related to regulatory filings or annual returns when needed.

Compliance & Risk Awareness:

  • Flag potential legal or policy risks in organizational activities or communications.
  • Help update or maintain internal policies (conflict of interest, confidentiality, data protection).
  • Support consistency between operational procedures and legal requirements.

Q U A L I F I C A T I O N S & S K I L L S :

  • Background or studies in law (e.g., law student, paralegal, or legal professional).
  • Understanding or interest in Canadian nonprofit or corporate law.
  • Strong attention to detail and comfort reviewing written materials.
  • Clear and professional communicator, able to explain legal concepts simply.
  • Reliable, organized, and able to handle sensitive information responsibly.
