DIRECTOR OF ISSUES MANAGEMENT & STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS — VOLUNTEER, PART-TIME

Time Commitment: Part-time volunteer role targeting 15 to 20 hours per week, including meetings and all role work. Duration negotiable, four month minimum.

This is a remote volunteer opportunity with Right to Live Canada, a virtual-office based Canadian non-profit start-up.

------ THE MISSION

Right to Live Canada exists to make continued life a practical, supported, executable option when a preferable living future exists but the systems required to reach it do not.

We were founded in response to systemic poverty-driven euthanasia among Canadians with disabilities: cases in which people pursue MAiD because housing, income, care, treatment, or other essentials required to continue living are unavailable. In those cases, death can become the executable option while a preferable living future remains structurally out of reach.

That distinction defines Right to Live. Right to Live is the only organization in Canada addressing euthanasia with a practical solution model for all Canadians - not merely opposing MAiD, documenting harms, or raising awareness, but building the service, financing, technological, and institutional infrastructure that can make continued life executable. The scale of the issue is already national: 16,499 Canadians received MAiD in 2024, equal to 5.1% of all deaths in Canada, and the number of MAiD provisions increased another 6.9% over 2023 after years of year-over-year growth. MAiD is the fourth leading cause of death in Canada. And those 16,499 deaths capture only euthanasia itself - not Canadians who die because care is inaccessible, support gaps go unresolved, or life-preserving and specialty treatments cannot be reached. We were founded in response to poverty-driven disability euthanasia, but the solution is not limited to disability: Continuity is being built for any Canadian facing a potential death where a preferable living future can still be achieved.

We call that infrastructure Continuity: the service, financial, technological, and institutional architecture required to connect a person facing potential death to a preferable living future. The model is designed to identify what would make continued life viable, assemble the intervention, solve the financing problem, and execute it. Its scope can extend from social and medical supports to frontier technologies where the body itself becomes the limiting factor.

Right to Live is building this through four core areas:

• Continuity Service — the practical service layer: identify what is driving a person toward an avoidable death, design a preferable living future, determine how it can be financed, execute the intervention, and produce an actual outcome rather than another referral dead end.
• Continuity Insurance — developing insurance-based financing so people can pre-fund access to Continuity interventions before a future death-risk scenario becomes an immediate financial crisis.
• Social Brokerage — developing a way to finance people who cannot afford Continuity by turning the anonymized outcome of a life supported into a measurable impact product for global impact buyers.
• Corporate Farming — building and incubating mission-locked organizations around the technologies, services, infrastructure, and concepts Continuity will need, then spinning them out to pursue those missions at full scale.

Right to Live is an early-stage, founder-led Canadian nonprofit built to move at startup speed on problems normally treated as separate: poverty-driven disability euthanasia, the absence of a practical service pathway to preferable living futures, the financing gaps that can make survival inaccessible, and frontier technologies that could preserve continuity when ordinary life-support pathways run out. OpenABLS is one of our most ambitious examples: a nonprofit-led, open-source Artificial Brain Life Support development project working toward a reference design that could sustain a living brain when the body can no longer support it. The work combines immediate human impact with extraordinary long-term potential.

------ ROLE DESCRIPTION

This is a part-time, volunteer, and remote department-head role for a Director of Issues Management & Strategic Communications with Right to Live Canada. The internal title is Head of Global Narrative Integrity.

The Director will build and lead Right to Live Canada’s Global Narrative Integrity function: a global media intelligence and response operation focused on the accuracy and completeness of public coverage concerning MAiD, Right to Live, economic euthanasia, Continuity, and related issues. The function will identify material factual errors, significant omissions, and misleading framing, determine when intervention is warranted, and develop proportionate, evidence-based responses.

Global Narrative Integrity is at an early formation stage. Two initial working assets exist: a Media Intelligence Priorities document defining the first issues the function should monitor, and a MAiD media-outreach package demonstrating several early response approaches. The Director will use these as starting inputs while establishing the core function itself, including the operating model, monitoring approach, team structure, training, quality control, workflow, and supporting tools required for sustained operation.

The first phase of the role will be highly hands-on. The Director will personally monitor selected media and information channels, identify relevant coverage, research the underlying facts, determine whether a response is justified, draft or review outreach, engage the appropriate journalist, editor, platform, policymaker, or other stakeholder where necessary, and follow cases through to outcome. The operating model will be developed from this live work so that the department is built around a process that has been tested in practice rather than designed in the abstract.

The purpose of Global Narrative Integrity is not to secure favourable coverage. Critical or negative reporting is not, by itself, a reason to intervene. The function exists to improve the accuracy and completeness of the public record. Where a specific factual error is documented, the team may seek a correction. Where important context is absent, the appropriate response may instead be to provide evidence, background material, or relevant Right to Live resources. The Director will be responsible for maintaining that distinction and ensuring interventions are accurate, proportionate, and professionally executed.

Once the core function is working reliably, the Director will convert it into a simple, approachable, and repeatable operating system that can be taught to volunteers and executed consistently at scale. They will recruit and train the initial team, establish practical review and escalation mechanisms, refine the process through live use, and expand monitoring coverage without allowing the operation to become unnecessarily complex. The long-term objective is a distributed global function capable of operating across countries, languages, media markets, policy environments, and information channels, with the potential to support thousands of volunteers while maintaining strong standards of accuracy and judgment.

------ QUALIFICATIONS

Universal Requirement:

• You must possess good equipment for virtual meetings, both video and audio.
• You must attend virtual meetings with the capability to give it your full attention, like a dedicated office room or space.

Required:

• Substantial professional experience in media intelligence, issues management, strategic communications, journalism or editing, fact-checking, investigations, public affairs, or a closely related research-and-response function.
• Demonstrated experience building, launching, or substantially rebuilding a media-intelligence, issues-management, monitoring-and-response, editorial, investigative, or comparable function.
• Strong hands-on capability in media monitoring, source research, fact verification, and assessment of whether a factual error, omission, or framing issue warrants action.
• Exceptional writing and editing ability, including the ability to explain complex or sensitive issues clearly and produce concise, credible correction requests, contextual briefings, and stakeholder outreach.
• Strong editorial judgment, including the ability to distinguish factual error, material omission, reasonable disagreement, and criticism that does not warrant intervention.
• Ability and willingness to perform the frontline work personally during the function’s build stage, including monitoring, research, assessment, drafting, outreach, follow-up, and handling sensitive matters requiring senior judgment.
• Experience building and operating a team simultaneously, including recruiting, training, reviewing work, managing performance, and converting proven practice into a repeatable operating model.
• Comfort using AI to accelerate research, monitoring, drafting, translation, and organization while independently verifying substantive claims against reliable sources.
• Excellent organization, discretion, ownership, and follow-through in a remote startup environment, with the ability to develop a function from hands-on execution into a distributed volunteer operation.

Preferred:

• Newsroom, media intelligence, editorial standards, media relations, issues or crisis communications, fact-checking, OSINT, watchdog, intelligence, or investigative experience.
• Experience working on healthcare, disability, public policy, regulated systems, human rights, or other high-sensitivity subject matter where factual precision matters.
• Experience monitoring international media, policy sources, parliamentary records, social platforms, or other high-volume information streams across multiple countries, regions, or languages.
• Experience turning a proven manual workflow into clear monitoring tools, training material, templates, trackers, review steps, or other operating infrastructure that can be used consistently by a distributed team.
• Experience building or scaling a volunteer, community, distributed, startup, or mission-driven operation while maintaining a simple and usable operating model.

Right to Live Canada is an early-stage, founder-led organization pursuing rapid national and global expansion. The role is best suited to someone who is comfortable with startup intensity, high responsibility, and a culture of serious dedication to the mission.
