Director of Human Resources

Souls Harbour Rescue Mission | Halifax, Nova Scotia, or Remote within Canada

Change Lives. Build Culture. Help Shape the Future of a Growing Mission.

At Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, we believe every person deserves hope, dignity, and the opportunity for transformation. Since our founding in 2010, we have grown from a small soup kitchen into one of Atlantic Canada’s most impactful charitable organizations, serving communities across Nova Scotia through emergency support programs, recovery services, housing initiatives, and social enterprise operations.

Today, our team of approximately 200 employees is united by a shared commitment to rescuing people from poverty, addiction, and despair.

As we continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced, strategic, and values-driven Director of Human Resources to lead and elevate our human resources function.

This is much more than a traditional HR leadership role. It is an opportunity to influence organizational culture, strengthen leadership capability, develop an exceptional employee experience, and ensure our people practices support the mission for years to come.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Enterprise Services Officer, the Director of Human Resources serves as the senior HR leader for Souls Harbour Rescue Mission. This individual will provide expert HR advice and operational leadership across all aspects of human resources and partner closely with organizational leaders across multiple locations.

You will be a trusted advisor to senior leaders, a coach to managers, an advocate for employees, and a steward of Souls Harbour’s established culture and Christian identity.

You will help ensure that Souls Harbour remains a workplace where people feel supported, valued, engaged, accountable, and inspired to make a meaningful difference every day.

This position may be performed remotely from within Canada or from our Halifax office. The successful candidate must be available to work primarily within Atlantic time-zone business hours.

For employees working remotely, the position includes approximately one annual in-person visit to Nova Scotia. Souls Harbour welcomes applicants with disabilities and will provide reasonable accommodation throughout the recruitment process and employment, including accommodation related to travel.

What You Will Lead

Strategic Human Resources Leadership

  • Develop recommendations for an organization-wide people strategy aligned with Souls Harbour’s mission, vision, values, and long-term objectives, and lead the implementation of approved priorities.
  • Oversee the HR Department, providing leadership, direction, and accountability for the effective delivery of HR services and priorities, while building the team, systems, processes, and capabilities needed to support the organization’s current and future needs.
  • Partner with executive leadership to support organizational growth, workforce planning, organizational design, and change initiatives.
  • Provide expert advice on employment legislation, workforce risk, policy development, and emerging human resources needs.
  • Establish meaningful HR measures and use people analytics and organizational insights to identify trends, assess risk, inform recommendations, and support leadership decision-making.
  • Help build scalable people practices and HR infrastructure capable of supporting continued growth and future multi-provincial operations.

Culture, Engagement and Employee Experience

  • Help safeguard and strengthen a distinctly Christian organizational culture grounded in love, gratitude, generosity, accountability, servant leadership, and service to others.
  • Recommend and lead initiatives that strengthen employee engagement, recognition, wellness, retention, and professional growth.
  • Revitalize and lead Souls Harbour’s CliftonStrengths program, equipping leaders to embed a strengths-based approach into onboarding, leadership development, team building, coaching, and employee growth.
  • Foster a workplace where employees are treated with dignity and respect and experience a strong sense of trust, support, and belonging.
  • Partner with leaders to address workplace culture challenges, reinforce organizational expectations, and build healthy, high-performing teams.

Talent Acquisition and Workforce Development

  • Lead the development and execution of attraction, recruitment, onboarding, and retention strategies.
  • Position Souls Harbour to compete effectively for experienced, capable, and mission-aligned talent.
  • Build leadership and management capacity and develop future leaders through coaching, development programs, succession planning, and talent management initiatives.
  • Develop partnerships with community organizations, educational institutions, professional networks, and workforce agencies to strengthen talent pipelines.

Employee Relations

  • Provide authoritative guidance on complex employee relations matters, including investigations, accommodations, conflict resolution, discipline, terminations, and performance management.
  • Lead and support workplace investigations with professionalism, impartiality, thoroughness, and compassion.
  • Mitigate organizational risk and ensure fair, consistent, and legally compliant employment practices through proactive policy administration, leadership training, and sound documentation.
  • Equip leaders and managers to address employee concerns promptly, appropriately, and confidently.

HR Operations and Governance

  • Provide leadership and oversight for performance management, compensation support, benefits administration, employee records, HR systems, and other core HR functions.
  • Work closely with the Finance team to support accurate and timely payroll administration, effective information-sharing, and clear accountability between the HR and payroll functions.
  • Serve as Souls Harbour’s primary liaison with Peninsula Canada, making effective use of its HR, employment relations, and health and safety expertise while ensuring its advice is appropriately applied within the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable employment, human rights, occupational health and safety, accessibility, privacy, and related legislation across all jurisdictions in which Souls Harbour operates.
  • Develop, maintain, and consistently administer clear, practical, and legally sound human resources policies and procedures.
  • Continuously improve HR processes to strengthen the employee and manager experience and ensure consistent practices across the organization.
  • Leverage technology, data, and modern HR practices to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and responsiveness of the HR function.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a Human Resources team.
  • Establish clear roles, priorities, service standards, and accountability within the HR function.
  • Create a culture of collaboration, responsiveness, innovation, accountability, and service excellence within the HR team.
  • Ensure the HR function provides timely, practical, and consistent support to employees and leaders across all Souls Harbour locations.
