
Director, Further Poultry Processing and Canadian Hatchery Federation
The Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors (CPEP) is the national trade organization representing the interests of more than 170 Canadian poultry processing, egg grading and processing and hatchery establishments. Representing some of the largest agri-food producers in Canada, our member companies process over 90% of Canada’s chicken, turkey, eggs and hatching eggs. CPEP’s team is based in Ottawa.
Position Overview
The Director, FPPAC & CHF, will be based in Ottawa, Ontario, focused on the fastest growing sector of the animal protein industry – poultry. Reporting to the President and CEO, the Director will work collaboratively with other CPEP Directors who represent the interests of the other sectors under the CPEP umbrella, and with the Regulatory and Technical Director and support staff, all working together as a dynamic CPEP team.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the main contact and advocate for FPPAC and CHF member companies. CPEP subject matter expert and the key staff support for FPPAC and CHF sectors.
- Build consensus positions for FPPAC and CHF members to be presented to supply managed producer agencies, government departments, retail and food service organizations, etc.
- As FPPAC Director, work to ensure that further processors have access to the poultry supply required to meet their customer needs from both domestic and import supply sources. This requires data collection and analysis of domestic chicken and turkey markets as well as relevant trade patterns and data.
- As CHF Director, work to ensure that hatcheries have access to the hatching eggs required to meet their customer needs from both domestic and import supply sources. Additionally, work to ensure that hatcheries operate in a favourable supply chain environment, with respect to animal welfare, antimicrobial usage, pathogen reduction, and disease management.
- Develop an understanding of, and close relationship with, each of the chicken, turkey, table egg and hatching egg producers’ agencies that operate under a federal and provincial supply management system.
- Provide full support and leadership to FPPAC and CHF representatives on the Boards of Directors of Chicken Farmers of Canada, Turkey Famers of Canada, Egg Farmers of Canada, and Canadian Hatching Egg Producers and to representatives on committees or working groups of these Agencies.
Become knowledgeable of the import supply elements including the relevant harmonized tariff classification, the global and supplementary import system providing support to FPPAC’s and CHF’s TQAC (Tariff Quota Advisory Committee) representative. - Serve as CPEP’s primary contact on issues and policies of concern for poultry further processors and hatcheries, engage government departments and agencies such as the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Health Canada, Global Affairs Canada, and Agriculture & Agri-food Canada on key issues, and develop working relationships with officials from these departments.
- Monitor issues in the industry (hatcheries, poultry and competitive proteins), both nationally and internationally and provide advocacy to members and directors.
- Work with the respective Sector Chairs and directors to prepare materials and act as key staff resource for FPPAC and CHF meetings or prepare reports.
- Participate in industry, government and stakeholder meetings on behalf of CPEP, with a focus on FPPAC and CHF and represent sector members on various industry committees.
- Work with other CPEP Sector Directors, the Technical and Regulatory Director and the President & CEO to develop strong single messages when such opportunities arise.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Knowledge of the agriculture industry, poultry processing, trade issues, food safety, policies and regulations, and/or supply chain management would provide a distinct advantage.
- Exceptional relationship management skills, including effective communication, negotiation, and consensus-building skills, while operating collaboratively at all levels.
- Proven ability to create and sustain a shared vision, while being versatile and adaptable in establishing and maintaining mutually respectful and beneficial relationships with key stakeholders.
- The successful candidate must have sound judgment, demonstrate strong knowledge of macro and micro economic principles, and possess strong analytical skills. including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint).
- Post-secondary education in one or more of Business, Agriculture, International Trade, Economics or Political Science and/or relevant experience, is required
- This position requires the ability to multi-task, to work independently within a small staff environment, to have flexible working hours when required and to travel regularly within Canada.
- Fluent communication skills, orally and in writing, in both official languages would be considered an asset.
