About Us:

The Alzheimer Society of York Region (AS York) is a non-profit, community-based agency committed to improving the quality of life for individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. We provide supportive counselling, education, and respite care for caregivers, as well as social and therapeutic activities through our D.A.Y. Centres for persons living with cognitive impairments. We work in collaboration with multiple community partners across York Region to deliver impactful programs and services. We are seeking an enthusiastic and resourceful Director of Finance & Support Services

Position Summary:

The Director of Finance & Support Services is a member of the Senior Leadership Team, contributing to strategic planning and policy development. This role leads financial strategy, planning, controllership, and reporting, while supporting Board-related matters as needed.

The Director is responsible for ensuring strong organizational compliance through risk management, accountability frameworks, and effective information systems. The role also oversees Finance, Administration, IT, Property Management, and Support Services, ensuring coordinated operations that support program delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

Senior Management

  • Participate in strategic planning, policy development and operational plan processes by working with the CEO and senior management team to identify issues, direction and implementation strategies
  • Lead annual budget planning process in collaboration with senior management within approval timelines established by the CEO and provide input regarding the development of team budgets
  • Provide leadership in risk management strategies for Accreditation and ensure financial and operational support for Accreditation efforts in collaboration with Director of Client Programs and Services
  • Assist senior leadership team in identifying opportunities for funding and determining costeffectiveness of potential services
  • Make financial decisions in accordance with delegations of authority
  • Attend Board/Committee meetings and governance-related activities as required
  • Liaise with community organizations/stakeholders and participate on external committees
  • Carries out special or related assignments as directed by CEO

People Leadership & Performance Management

  • Develop and meet annual objectives and an operational plan for the Finance & Support Services team that will enable the delivery of AS York’s strategic priorities and organizational objectives
  • Provide direction, leadership and training opportunities for staff direct reports
  • Establish annual performance targets for direct reports aligned to strategic, operational, and accreditation plans

Finance

  • Member of the Audit & Risk Committee (ARC)
  • Ensure compliance with current legislation (CRA) and CPA Canada Handbook – Accounting, Part III, Accounting Standards for Not‑for‑Profit Organizations (ASNPO)plus relevant principles and standards, internal policies, and changes/reporting change
  • Monitor investments in accordance with corporate policies
  • Remain current with legislative and other government changes/reporting requirements
  • Establish standardized quality reporting systems for the development, monitoring and analysis of performance indicators, financial information, and organizational financial risk
  • Monitor budgets against actuals, identify and explain variances and accurately prepare and provide all internal financial reports to the Board of Directors, ARC and CEO in accordance with timelines
  • Prepare and submit mandatory financial reports on time as required by all external funding sources as set out in contracts including, but not limited to, Ontario Health auditor and other funders
  • Monitor and report financial risks as set out in the Ontario Health contract
  • Oversee bookkeeping function including maintenance of general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll
  • Prepare for and lead annual audit, work with the external auditors, implement audit recommendations subject to ARC approval
  • Review and/or prepare financial portions of proposal/grant applications
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with representatives of financial institutions that hold AS York assets

Technology, Assets, and Risk Management

  • Monitor property leases and insurance contracts for risk management and compliance
  • Identify and oversee all IT related software and hardware needs of the organization
  • Assist with service delivery and business partner contracts to ensure that deliverables are met in accordance with contract terms and conditions
  • Maintain an effective supplier management approach to ensure that services from all vendors and contractors are cost effective and value added
  • Ensure the Society’s facilities are well maintained by planning, coordinating, and monitoring repairs and upgrades to existing facilities
  • Manage acquisition of capital assets and ensure that assets are properly recorded, amortized, and disposed of as appropriate

Information Security & Privacy

  • Supports the Privacy Officer to recommend, develop, and implement policies and processes that will ensure that the integrity and privacy of all data is maintained in accordance with legislative requirements
  • Implement processes and mechanisms to support partner/system data sharing requirements

Qualifications:

  • CPA designation with a minimum of five years’ senior leadership experience overseeing financial reporting, internal controls, compliance, and corporate stewardship within the not‑for‑profit Health Services sector
  • Strong expertise in Ontario Healthcare Reporting Standards (OHRS), including M‑SAA, and Ministry of Health / Ontario Health funding and reporting requirements
  • Proven leader with experience building, mentoring, and managing high‑performing, multidisciplinary teams
  • Senior-level responsibility for the strategic and operational oversight of Finance, Information Technology, Facilities, and Corporate Administrative functions
  • Extensive experience with enterprise financial and accounting systems, MS Office, and databases, including advanced reporting, query development, and platforms such as AlayaCare
  • Executive oversight of payroll governance and administration, ensuring compliance with legislation, collective agreements, and organizational policies
  • Exceptional financial analysis and reporting skills, with the ability to translate complex information into actionable insights for executive leadership and Boards
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership, including participation in organizational strategy, multi‑year financial and capital planning, and resource optimization
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with experience managing enterprise risk and complex operational challenges
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience presenting to senior leadership, Boards, funders, and external stakeholders
  • Proven ability to lead effectively through change in complex, regulated healthcare and public‑sector environments

Transparency matters to us. While this role has a broader established salary band, the target hiring range for this position is $92,797 – $111,356 per year. Actual compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including relevant experience, skills, knowledge, and applicable certifications, and current market data.
