DIRECTOR OF FINANCE AND OPERATIONS
Position Summary
Location: Toronto, ON â In Person
Reports to: CEO
Employment Type: Full Time (1-Year Contract with 6 monthsâ probation; possibility for renewal / extension)
Salary Range: $82,000 â $92,000 depending on qualifications.
Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Finance & Operations oversees the organizationâs financial, governance, and operational processes and policies, ensuring that all business operations run efficiently and effectively to achieve their objectives. This position supports the organizationâs execution against its business and strategic plans, as set out by the CEO, and operationalizes best practices, appropriately integrating and collaborating with teams and functional areas, to ensure strong organizational performance to meet goals to best fulfill CANFARâs mission.
As Director of Finance & Operations, you will play a crucial role in maximizing operational efficiencies and profitability by supporting the organizationâs financial administration and reporting, donor operations, office management, business and financial policies, HR, event logistics, and gift processing and receipting. The successful candidate will oversee day-to-day financial and operational processes, support organizational reporting and compliance, maintain donor and accounting systems, and contribute to the successful execution of CANFARâs fundraising and community initiatives.
This position requires exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational and communication skills, discretion, adaptability, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
This is a 5-days-a-week in-person position. You may work remotely from time to time, subject to the provisions of the Companyâs remote work policy.
CANFARâs standard working hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm; additional hours may be required during high event season.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Finance:
- Oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and auditing, while maintaining relationships with banks, financial institutions, and other external partners;
- Manage the organizationâs cash flow and financial risk, ensuring the foundation maintains sufficient liquidity to meet all its obligations
- Support the financial planning, including budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial modeling;
- Develop and implement financial strategies to support the Foundationâs mission and objectives;
- Provide strategic recommendations to the CEO and Executive Committee based on financial analysis and projections;
- Support the CEO and Foundation administration in developing the annual budget, meeting budget goals, reviewing financial performance, and improving program budgeting and reporting practices.
- Manage effectively within this budget, and report accurately on progress made and challenges encountered;
- Ensure effective financial management of grant funds, including compliance with donor restrictions and reporting requirements set by the Board of Directors and SAC; and
- Ensure the continued financial viability of CANFARâs programs through sound fiscal management. Ensure the CANFAR team adheres to the strategic plan and delivers status reports to the CEO.
Business Operations:
- Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard the Foundationâs assets and ensure financial integrity;
- Work with senior staff to understand all needs and look for solutions during budgeting or resource allocations;
- Provide input and support in establishing clear plans, targets, and budgets to support operational excellence;
- Participate in the planning and development of broad mission-oriented goals and objectives and strategic planning meetings, representing teams and team members in these meetings by providing detailed information regarding their capacities and performance capabilities;
- Contribute to the development of the operating strategies to attain the mission-oriented goals and objectives set by the Board and CEO;
- Collaborate with program staff to develop budgets and financial plans for grant proposals and funded projects while ensuring that the programs stay on track to meet set goals and budget;
- Oversee the preparation and submission of regulatory filings, including tax returns and financial statements, while ensuring compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, accounting standards, and requirements; and
- Develop program impact metrics consistent with relevant plans and create a system of ongoing evaluation, ensuring strong work plans and alignment between individual, team, and organizational goals and priorities.
Governance:
- Act as the Secretariat to the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and Scientific Advisory Committee; and
- Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to the CEO, Executive Committee, Board of Directors, major donors, and key stakeholders.
Problem Solving & Ownership:
- Resolve issues following CANFARâs standards, practices, and procedures; and
- Identify alternative solutions and select the best solution for day-to-day operational and administrative issues and problems, ensuring a positive impact on operational processes and/or relationships with internal and external partners.
Organizational Support:
- Ensure alignment of all operational, financial, human resources, and administrative processes and initiatives to the strategic direction of the CANFAR;
- Manifest engagement to CANFARâs goals, strategies, and values in the day-to-day behaviours and administration of these processes and initiatives;
- Seek performance input from managers and other CANFAR team members to identify their performance gaps and inform their development plan;
- Participate in event execution, onsite support, and post-event reconciliation activities;
- Collaborate with internal teams, volunteers, and external partners to support successful program delivery; and
- Support a work environment based on the CANFAR core mission and values.
Qualifications
- Bachelorâs degree, certificate or equivalent in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, or a related field (required).
- Certification or training in accounting, HR, nonâprofit financial management, business administration, project management, or non-profit governance (asset).
- Minimum 5-7 years of progressive experience in finance and operations, including budgeting, forecasting, cashâflow oversight, and compliance with Canadian accounting and CRA requirements.
- Experience in nonâprofit or charitable financial management an asset.
- Proficiency in Raiserâs Edge, Financial Edge, and Microsoft Office 365.
- Strong operational leadership skills with demonstrated ability to design, implement, and refine internal controls, systems, and crossâorganizational processes.
- Proven experience supporting governance functions, preparing board and committee materials, and communicating complex financial information clearly to diverse stakeholders.
- Exceptional attention to detail, analytical strength, and the ability to develop clear, actionable reporting, KPIs, and performance metrics.
- Collaborative, solutionsâoriented leader who builds strong relationships across teams, volunteers, and external partners, with 2-3 years of supervisory or teamâlead experience considered an asset.
- High integrity, discretion, and sound judgment in handling confidential financial, donor, and HR information.
- Excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fastâpaced, missionâdriven environment.
