Position summary
This position oversees all finance and legal functions for LiveDifferent.
Responsibilities and duties
Financial accounting and reporting
- Develop and maintain timely and accurate financial statements and reports that are appropriate for the users and in accordance with GAAP.
- Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures.
- Ensure that all statutory requirements of the organization are met including Charitable Status, Withholding Payments (CPP, EI), Employer Health Tax and HST rebates are filed.
- Prepare all supporting information for the annual audit and liaise with the board and the external auditors as necessary.
- Document and maintain complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions.
- Develop and maintain financial accounting systems for cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit control, and petty cash.
- Reconcile bank and investment accounts.
- Review monthly results and implement quarterly variance reporting.
- Manage the cash flow and prepare cash flow forecasts in accordance with policy.
- Oversee the bookkeeping function including maintenance of the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll.
- Manage the acquisition of capital assets and ensure that assets are properly recorded, amortized, and disposed of as appropriate.
- Prepare reports for Board meetings to advise on financial issues.
Payroll preparation and administration
- Oversee all payroll functions to ensure that employees are paid in a timely and accurate manner.
- Negotiate and manage employee insurance and benefits plans.
- Process and submit statutory and benefits remittances on time.
- Issue annual T4s.
Budget preparation
- Establish guidelines for budget and forecast preparation, and prepare the annual budget in consultation with the Leadership team.
- Assist Program Directors and Project Managers with the preparation of budgets.
Project management accounting
- Maintain financial records for each project in a manner that facilitates management reports.
- Provide accurate and timely reporting on the financial activity of individual projects.
Risk management
- Monitor risk management policies and procedures to ensure that program and organizational risks are minimized.
- Advise the organization’s leadership on appropriate insurance coverage for the organization and the Board of Directors.
- Maximize income where possible and appropriate.
- Negotiate for lines of credit or other financial services as required and appropriate.
Administration
- Oversee the management of all leases, contracts and other financial commitments.
- Participate on the HR committee and monitor all legislation relevant to the organization (employment standards, occupational health and safety, human rights, etc) and ensure compliance.
Other
- Active member with the Leadership Team.
- Work with Directors to ensure efficient, transparent and responsible use of resources.
- Oversee the third-party financial audit process each year.
- Support and give leadership to any staff positions providing financial support.
- Ensure the filing of charitable / corporate requirements are completed in a timely manner each year.
- Responsible for completion of and adherence to charitable / legal requirements nationally and internationally (agency agreements, control of assets, etc) and Imagine Canada accreditation requirements.
- Oversee and assist with all legal aspects related to LiveDifferent.
Qualifications
Education & designation
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is an asset.
- Post-secondary degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
Experience
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive experience in financial management and accounting, preferably in a non-profit or charitable organization.
- Proven experience in:
- Preparing and analyzing financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Overseeing audits, compliance, and reporting to a Board of Directors
- Budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
- Cash flow management and reporting
- Leading cross-functional teams and working at a leadership level
- Managing legal and contractual obligations, including risk management
Skills and competencies
- Understanding of and alignment with LiveDifferent’s mission and values.
- Strong understanding of non-profit accounting standards, including charity-related compliance (CRA, HST, CPP, EI, etc.).
- Excellent knowledge of internal controls, financial policies, and procedures.
- Proficiency in Quickbooks and financial systems; experience with Salesforce or similar CRM systems is an asset.
- Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and support multiple departments.
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Salary range of $80,000 – $90,000 or negotiable based on experience
