Director – Summer Camp & Foundation Position Title: Director

Location: Remote (September through May), On site (as needed June through August)
Status: Two Year Contract leading to Full Time
About Camp Winston and the Winston Way
Camp Winston and the Camp Winston Foundation is a charity that offers summer programs, respite programs, and support for youth with a variety of neurobiological abilities and their families/caregivers. Our programs support youth living with Autism, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, OCD, Anxiety, PTSD and ODD.
The importance of the Camp Winston experience for our youth and their families is now more crucial than ever. We believe in a future where neurodiversity is understood, valued, accepted and, most of all, celebrated.
Position Overview
The Director is responsible for the leadership, strategic direction, and operational management of the Summer Camp and its Foundation. This role will oversee all aspects of the organization’s programs, fundraising, financial health, partner relationships, staff leadership, and compliance. The Director collaborates closely with the Board of Directors and represents the organization with external stakeholders, ensuring the camp’s mission, vision, and values are upheld while driving sustainable growth and excellence in operations. This role requires the presence of the Director to be available, when needed, during the operational summer months of the summer camp session defined roughly as June through the end of August of each calendar year. The Director should have a keen interest in serving, and some experience with, the population Camp Winston serves (neurodivergent youth and young adults).
Key Responsibilities Leadership & Governance
- Openness to recognize when change is necessary, and to develop, implement and lead effective change management strategies.
- Act as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and staff.
Attend and contribute to all Board of Directors and committee meetings as required.
- Provide the Board with regular reports on finances, operations, fundraising progress, and strategic initiatives.
- Implement Board-approved policies and decisions while offering leadership and direction to achieve organizational goals. Financial Management
- Develop, oversee, and manage the annual operating budget in collaboration with the Board Finance Committee.
- Ensure transparent and responsible financial stewardship, including forecasting, monitoring, and reporting.
- Oversee bookkeeping team, maintain systems for sound accounting practices and compliance requirements.
- Oversee cash flow and financial sustainability planning.
- Adhere to all compliance requirements.
Fundraising & Partnerships
- Effectively lead a fundraising campaign and achieve targets.
- Build and steward strong relationships with donors, foundations, corporations, and community partners.
- Oversee grant writing, sponsorship proposals, and other development initiatives.
Staff Leadership & Human Resources
- Recruit, hire, onboard, and provide leadership for all full-time staff and seasonal hires.
- Establish a strong culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
- Provide mentorship and ensure compliance with HR best practices.
- Model professionalism, empathy, and integrity for staff and campers. Program & Operations Management
- Work closely with the seasonal Camp Management & Program team, overseeing all aspects of the summer camp’s daily and seasonal operations to ensure safety, quality programming, and mission alignment.
Collaborate with program staff to enhance camper experience and parent satisfaction.
- Liaise with camp parents, addressing needs and concerns with transparency and care.
- Ensure all health, safety, governmental, and association credentials and licenses are maintained.
Foundation Leadership & Community Engagement
- Collaborate across internal and external resources to meet common objectives & improve outcomes.
- Provide leadership and direction to the Foundation, aligning efforts with mission-program excellence and financial sustainability.
- Represent the camp and Foundation in public forums, building positive relationships with community stakeholders and partners. Marketing & Communications
- Oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on proposal development, grant writing, and delivering presentations.
- Lead marketing and communication strategies to build brand awareness, enrollment, and donor engagement.
- Oversee digital platforms, publications, media outreach, and storytelling about the camp’s impact.
- Ensure consistent messaging aligned with the organization’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.
Qualifications / Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required; specialization in nonprofit management, education, business administration, or related field preferred.
- 7+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience in nonprofit management or a related sector. Summer camp background an asset.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising, achieving financial goals, cultivating donor relationships, and Board management.
- Financial management, budgeting, and business operations skills.
- Experience managing staff and fostering cohesive, mission-driven teams.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
- Knowledge of compliance standards for youth-serving organizations, camps, or nonprofits an asset.
- Some connection to the neurodiverse community.
- Ability to balance strategic leadership with hands-on management.
- Ability to commute when necessary to the camp location.
