Development Officer

Academics Without Borders / Universitaires sans frontières (AWB/USF) is a Canadian nonprofit organization committed to strengthening higher education in low- and middle-income countries. Since our inception, AWB has partnered with universities across the global south in capacity-building projects essential for sustainable development.

Our approach is rooted in collaboration: we work directly with institutions to identify their needs and deploy skilled volunteers to support initiatives in areas such as curriculum design of existing and new degree programs, teaching methodologies and local research capacity. To date, we've worked on over 200 projects, impacting communities by empowering local institutions to lead their own educational advancement.

Job Description - Development Officer

AWB seeks a highly motivated person who enjoys working independently to join our virtual office as a part-time Development Officer in a contract position. Working under the direction of the Executive Director, the Development Officer will lead administrative work directed at grant applications, individual giving strategies and other fundraising campaigns as directed.

Responsibilities:

• Research new philanthropic foundations that are well matched to AWB priorities, compile data about potential funders
• Create grant management calendar, draft letters of intent, grant proposals, budgets and supporting documents
• In collaboration with the Executive Director, create multi channel fundraising campaign plans and content
• Cold call foundations, organizations and individuals to gather more details and information
• Arrange meetings with potential donors
• Communicate with and cultivate current donors
• Draft and edit communication and marketing materials for various fundraising specific marketing initiatives
• General fundraising activities including writing thank you letters, presentations, reports and other stewardship activities
• Other tasks as assigned

Requirements:

• At least 5 years of experience working in fund development in the Canadian charitable sector
• Articulate with an aptitude for verbal and written communication
• Expertise using Google Workspace - Google Drive, Docs & Sheets and Gmail - is essential
• Excellent administrative and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
• Knowledge of the family foundation landscape in Canada is considered an asset
• Working knowledge of French is an asset

Terms and hours of work

• $35-40/per hour based on experience for up to a maximum of 10 hours per week
• AWB offers a flexible remote work model. Our team is deployed across Canada. This position will be based in Vancouver, primarily working remotely from a private home office with the ability to meet with the Executive Director in person weekly. This is a virtual position and we do not provide computer hardware or software, candidates must have access to their own working computer. The ability to meet the Executive Director in person weekly is required
