Mothers Matter Canada seeks a detail-oriented, analytically minded summer student to join our team as a Data Management Specialist. Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, you will play a hands-on role in strengthening the data systems that drive our national network of maternal support programs. This is a unique opportunity to build real-world skills in data management, performance measurement, and AI-assisted reporting within a mission-driven nonprofit.

Key Responsibilities:
Data Collection, Quality Assurance & Systems
- Collect and reconcile program data from our Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) database and other systems.
- Maintain and improve Standard Operating Procedures for data entry and quality; run small “data clinics” for staff to provide coaching and receive feedback.
Reporting, Analysis & Interpretation
- Build and deliver monthly program innovation dashboards and custom reports for the CEO,COO and program teams.
- Perform descriptive and basic inferential analyses (cohort tracking, trend analysis, simple regressions or comparisons) and produce concise one-page insights and recommendations.
- Present findings in PMP meetings and prepare tailored briefs and slide decks for different audiences (site staff, program directors, leadership).
Performance Management Program Support
- Pull ETO reports, interpret output, and document service adjustments. Support follow-up actions and track outcomes.
- Support partner site monitoring by preparing site-level performance summaries and by reviewing and refining the template for feedback sessions that translate data into practice.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Lead small pilots to test new reporting techniques, visualization types, and AI-automated workflows; document results and recommend the scale of successful prototypes.
- Use AI to automate repetitive report tasks and build repeatable data pipelines to shorten report production time.
Ad Hoc & Cross-Functional Work
- Troubleshoot data and system issues, perform root cause analyses and propose corrective actions.
- Work directly with the COO, CEO and CFO on short-term projects (e.g., rapid-turnaround analyses to meet new funder requirements).
Qualifications:
Essential
- The ability to apply the lens of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging to all work

- Demonstrated skills in: data science, statistics, public policy, social sciences, computer science, public health, or a related discipline
- Strong analytical skills with experience cleaning, organizing, and interpreting quantitative data
- Proficiency with spreadsheet tools (Google Sheets) and comfort learning new database systems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate data findings into clear, non-technical language
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines independently
- High degree of accuracy, reliability and attention to detail
Preferred
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Google Data Studio, or similar)
- Familiarity with database platforms or case management systems (experience with Efforts to Outcomes / ETO is an asset)
- Interest in or experience with AI tools for data analysis, reporting automation, or workflow improvement
- Experience or coursework in program evaluation, performance measurement, or outcomes-based reporting
- Experience working in or with the nonprofit or settlement sector
- Bilingual (English/French) is an asset
Canada Summer Jobs Eligibility:
To be eligible for Canada Summer Jobs, the successful candidate must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of the summer job
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the job
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations (this includes having a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of the summer job)
Measures of Success
- Monthly dashboards and reports are delivered on time and rated as useful by the COO and program teams.
- At least one AI-automated reporting workflow or data pipeline is piloted, documented, and ready for ongoing use.
- Staff report increased confidence and competence in data entry and interpretation following data clinics and coaching.
Working Conditions
- Hybrid in-office/remote position; candidates must have access to reliable internet and a suitable work-from-home setup.
- Standard work week of 35 hours, with some flexibility in scheduling. At least 3 days in the office per week.
- Regular check-ins with the COO and cross-functional collaboration with program, finance, and leadership teams.
