Curatorial Assistant (Emerging Curator Mentorship Position)
Reports To: Interim Curator
Part-Time Contract (12 Months)
$24-$28 per hour
Position Summary
Station Gallery is seeking an emerging arts professional to join our team as Curatorial Assistant. Working closely with the Interim Curator, the successful candidate will support exhibitions, artist relations, collections management, research, and public engagement activities.
This position is designed as a mentorship opportunity for an individual interested in pursuing a career in curatorial practice, gallery administration, or arts leadership. The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience within a public gallery environment while contributing to meaningful exhibitions and programs.
Responsibilities
- Assist with exhibition planning, installation, and administration.
- Coordinate artwork intake, documentation, and artist communications.
- Support collections management, cataloguing, and research projects.
- Assist with exhibition texts, interpretive materials, and communications.
- Support artist talks, receptions, and exhibition-related programming.
- Attend and assist with exhibition openings and selected gallery events.
- Maintain curatorial records, schedules, and project files.
- Support special projects as assigned.
Mentorship & Professional Development
The Curatorial Assistant will work closely with the Interim Curator and will have opportunities to:
- Participate in exhibition planning and curatorial decision-making.
- Develop knowledge of artist relations and exhibition management.
- Gain experience in collections stewardship and gallery operations.
- Build professional networks within the arts and culture sector.
- Develop practical skills that support future advancement in curatorial and gallery careers.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Art History, Curatorial Studies, Museum Studies, Visual Arts, Arts Administration, or a related field.
- Strong research, writing, organizational, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated interest in contemporary art and curatorial practice.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Assets
- Previous gallery, museum, or arts organization experience.
- Experience with collections management or exhibition installation.
- Knowledge of contemporary Canadian art.
Compensation & Schedule
- Part-time contract position (approximately 24 hours per week).
- Occasional evening and weekend availability required.
- $24-$28 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
