The Law Foundation of Ontario was established in 1974 under the Law Society Act. The Foundation receives and uses the interest on lawyers’ and paralegals’ mixed trust accounts to support legal education, legal research, legal aid, and law libraries in Ontario. It does this through grantmaking to nonprofits and providing funds to Legal Aid Ontario. The Foundation also administers the Class Proceedings Fund, which provides cost assistance in class actions.

Controller

The Controller will lead a proactive and hands-on approach for the day-to-day financial operations and reporting. This includes preparing financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with financial regulations, and providing detailed financial information and analysis to support financial decisions.
Under the guidance of the Director, Strategic Finance, and in collaboration with a dynamic, high-performing team, you will provide controllership expertise and advice in the development, implementation, and enhancement of financial reporting, structures, and decision-making processes
You will also:
• Prepare and review periodic financial reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with
financial regulations.
• Manage and control ongoing maintenance of the Foundation’s Chart of Accounts.
• Lead the finance team in performing in-depth analysis of month-end variances.
• Maintain an effective framework of internal controls to safeguard assets and promote
efficiency.
• Oversee financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and the annual audit.
• Collaborate with the Foundation’s auditors and provide necessary documentation.
• Support cash planning processes to ensure timely disbursement of grants and
operational requirements.

• Lead and optimize the month-end close process to maintain timeliness and accuracy of
financial reporting.
• Coordinate the annual Budget process and update the Foundation’s forecasts.
• Promote and support the implementation of innovation and continuous improvement
within Finance and across the Foundation.
Qualifications We are seeking an innovative and positive team player with:
• A postsecondary degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field.
• Professional accounting designation (CA or CPA).
• 7-10 years of experience in progressively senior-level roles.
• Experience with multi-dimensional accounting applications within an ERP system.
• In-depth knowledge and skills in financial management, controllership, financial and
budget planning, and the full cycle of accounting activities.
• Proven understanding of banking processes, financial data analysis, and financial
legislation.
• Excellent relationship management and communication skills.
• Experience in the philanthropic and/or non-profit sector is preferred.

Hiring salary range: $135,000 - $155,000
