Unpaid Volunteer Position

The Contributing Writer (volunteer) is a member of the Operational Team and reports to the Director of Communications.

The Contributing Writer develops creative and thoughtful content for the UNACTO Journal, UNACTO’s digital blog. They submit at least one article a month of 500–1,000 words.

Writers receive bylines—their content is shared on UNACTO’s website and promoted via social media campaigns and newsletters.

Interested applicants should attach a cover letter and résumé (PDFs). Including web links to creative works—where you are mentioned by name—is highly desirable.

Note: This position is intended to support the 2025–2026 season, with the option to renew each year.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Composing articles through academic research and interviews, writing in plain and accessible language and utilizing industry best practices
  • Occasionally pitching story ideas
  • Following an editorial calendar and ensuring timely and professional delivery of materials
  • Engaging with the SDGs and issues affecting communities in Toronto, the GTA and Ontario
  • Other related duties as required

Desired Skills

  • A genuine interest in the United Nations mission and SDGs
  • Excellent research skills and experience with synthesizing information into accessible forms
  • Exceptional written and oral communication and a passion for storytelling and creating compelling content
  • Attention to detail and strong editorial judgement
  • A post-secondary diploma in journalism, English or a related field (in progress or completed) or an equivalent combination of academic and professional experience
  • An ability to work independently with little or no daily supervision
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a positive, flexible, team-oriented and responsive attitude towards open communication
  • Time management skills—prioritizing, scheduling, adapting—and a commitment to deadlines
  • Adherence to UNACTO’s house style guide and publication policies
  • Familiarity with the Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Trello, Slack and Zoom
