Locations: 90+ sites across Ontario, BC and Alberta

Commitment: Minimum 35 volunteer hours over 8 weeks

Reports To: Volunteer Management Team

Age Requirement: 18+

About STEM Camp

STEM Camp is a Canadian not-for-profit organization offering summer day camps for children ages 5–13. Our mission is to inspire youth through fun and engaging experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). We rely on passionate community members who want to make a positive impact in their community and help create meaningful learning experiences for young campers.

Position Summary

Community Volunteers play a key role in supporting counsellors and campers throughout the camp day. Volunteers help deliver hands-on STEM activities, engage campers, and contribute to a safe, fun, and inclusive camp environment. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with children, want to give back to their community, or are building experience in education, childcare, or youth programming.

Key Responsibilities

Camper Engagement

Assist counsellors during STEM activities and help campers follow instructions.

Provide one-on-one support (reading instructions, cutting materials, clarifying steps).

Encourage curiosity, problem-solving, and resilience with a positive attitude.

Help foster friendships and support camper social interactions.

Daily Camp Support

Participate in games, group activities, and transitions — active engagement is expected.

Supervise campers during lunch and ensure nut-free safety guidelines.

Support clean-up, organization of personal belongings, and general activity set-up.

Ensure all campers are always supervised and safe.

Behaviour & Emotional Support

Identify behaviour concerns early and assist counsellors in redirecting focus.

Help campers work through challenges by asking guiding questions (“What happened? What could we try next?”).

Promote a positive, inclusive environment where all children feel valued.

Required

18+ years of age

Experience working with children ages 5–13

Willingness to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check (within the last year)

Reliable, flexible, and comfortable in a busy environment

Strong communication and teamwork skills

Positive, enthusiastic attitude and willingness to participate actively

Ability to follow safety protocols and camp procedures

Desired Skills

Background or interest in STEM

Experience with coding, robotics, or Minecraft Education

First Aid/CPR

Experience supporting children one-on-one or in group settings

Previous camp or classroom experience

Ideal Backgrounds

Volunteers often come from roles such as:

Parents or grandparents wanting meaningful community involvement

Retirees

Educational assistants, tutors, librarians, or child/youth support workers

College/university students in teaching, ECE, social work, or related fields

Anyone who enjoys mentoring youth and contributing to their community

Time Commitment

Minimum 35 hours of volunteering over the summer

Schedules vary by location and can be flexible

Camps operate Monday–Friday throughout July and August
