NABORS circles of support are made up of our friends and families who freely give their time to assist us to make informed decisions, act on choices, manage our paid supports and feel safe. Members are supported to live in the homes of their choice and be fully included in the community.

About the Job:

Hours: The NABORS member that is currently hiring is seeking one candidate for approximately 16 – 22 hours per week, with opportunity for relief work.

Location: Jane and Eglinton

Hourly Wage: CA$23.34 per hour

Description:

An opportunity to support a gentle, soft-spoken middle-aged man in his home, community, and relationships. He lives in a cooperative housing community near Jane and Eglinton and enjoys good food, using public transit, music, computers, humour, and practicing his faith.

The Community Support Worker will work one-to-one with the member to enrich his daily life, build independence, and support meaningful community participation. This includes working together to overcome challenges, develop practical solutions, maintain routines, and explore inclusive opportunities that reflect his interests and goals.

The ideal candidate is creative, reliable, organized, and person-centred, with strong communication skills and a genuine interest in getting to know the member and supporting his connections with others.

What does a successful candidate possess?

  • Patience, strong active listening skills, kindness, a sense of humour curiosity and fun.
  • A sincere interest in getting to know the supported member, including his personality, interests, strengths, friendships, and the contributions he brings to relationships and the broader community.
  • Curiosity and openness to learning about the member’s unique personality, preferences, routines, and ways of engaging with others.
  • Respect for the member’s dignity, autonomy, choices, independence, and right to direct his own life.
  • Respect for and willingness to support the member’s faith and personal beliefs.
  • Interest in cooking and an ability to engage the member in preparing enjoyable, nutritious meals and provide support with self-regulation around food.
  • Strong computer and basic technology skills.
  • An enthusiasm to travel throughout Toronto and actively participate in the community alongside the member. The member is involved in a variety of volunteer opportunities, interests, and activities, and TTC travel is his main mode of transportation.
  • Knowledge of Toronto’s community resources, activities, and opportunities, or a willingness to learn and explore them.
  • An understanding of Autism, or an openness and willingness to learn about Autism and how to provide individualized, person-centred support.

The Support Worker provides person-centred support by:

  • Supporting the member to create and maintain a home where they have maximum choice and control over their environment, activities, routines, and associations, while feeling safe, secure, and comfortable welcoming family and friends.
  • Assisting with daily routines, personal hygiene, personal care, and self-care through minimal assistance, encouragement, and reminders that promote independence.
  • Supporting the member with meal planning and preparation, understanding dietary needs and restrictions, and encouraging healthy food choices.
  • Encouraging the member to be active and meaningfully involved in their local community, including within their cooperative housing and the broader neighbourhood.
  • Supporting participation in physical activities such as walking, swimming, and visiting the gym.
  • Helping the member explore and participate in meaningful volunteer opportunities, hobbies, recreational activities, and other interests that are enjoyable and have the potential to expand their social connections.
  • Supporting the development of natural relationships with family, friends, neighbours, and community members by identifying shared interests, facilitating positive introductions, and creating opportunities for meaningful connection.
  • As well as supporting the member to maintain and strengthen existing relationships with family and friends through phone calls, email, postal mail, and in-person visits.
  • Exploring opportunities for the member to participate in their church community, as appropriate.
  • Collaborating with team members and circle members to identify and develop meaningful opportunities for community involvement, relationship building, and personal growth.
  • Promoting the member’s safety, choice, dignity, independence, and participation in all areas of support.
  • Completing basic administrative responsibilities, including online timesheets and wellness journals and communicating with staff team and circle of support.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience supporting individuals with Autism
  • Experience connecting people, and ability to bridge and identify potential relationships in the community in a successful and person-centered way
  • A strong value base that supports the idea that we are all interdependent and have strengths and gifts to share with others.
  • Knowledge of Social Role Valorization (SRV)
  • Understanding and appreciation of NABORS mission, vision and principles
  • Flexibility as position requires varied support hours including potential overnight and weekend support
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required
  • Excellent organizational skills

Requirements:

  • Vulnerable Sector Check (we will assist with this)
  • 2 doses for the covid vaccine
  • Valid Emergency First aid & CPR (if you do not have a current one, there is a window of time to get it when you start)

The hiring is conditional upon clearing a Vulnerable Sector Police check. Emergency First Aid & CPR will be required before working.
