Community Manager
Description
About Us
The Local Charity is a volunteer-run Canadian registered non-profit charity based in Toronto devoted to creating diverse leaders of tomorrow. Our mission is to enable and inspire individuals to reach their greatest potential. Our goal is to empower them to be the author of their own story.
We are a lean operation run predominantly by volunteers with minimal overhead expenses.
Our sister brand is Success Accelerator, through which all our programs are delivered, supporting our main pillars of elevating and enhancing access to:
🧠 Mental Health

The Opportunity
TLC is building its social media presence and needs someone to nurture the relationships that form around it.
A Community Manager isn't just someone who replies to comments — it's the person who understands that a thoughtful response today could become a meaningful partnership, a donor relationship, or a young person finding the courage to join one of our programs.
This role is often overlooked in nonprofit marketing, but for us it's essential. Our goal isn't just to grow a following — it's to build a community of supporters who feel personally connected to the youth we serve and compelled to act. That doesn't happen through content alone. It happens through consistent, genuine engagement.
This is also a role where the strategy is still being shaped. You'll work with the Executive Director and the marketing team to co-develop our community engagement approach — figuring out where to show up, how to engage, and how to turn online interactions into real-world support. If you're someone who thrives in building something rather than inheriting a playbook, this is for you.
Your Team
This role is part of TLC's Marketing & Communications team, which includes a Content Strategist & Copywriter (who owns the editorial calendar, content strategy, and marketing coordination), a Graphic Designer (who creates branded visuals and templates), and a Community Manager (you — building relationships and engagement across our social platforms). Together, this team is responsible for building TLC's public presence, growing community support, and driving donor engagement.
You'll work closely with the Content Strategist & Copywriter, who sets the editorial calendar and coordinates the team's workflow. They'll keep you aligned on what content is going live and which calls to action are active — whether that's driving donations, growing followers, encouraging shares, or directing people to the website — so your engagement reinforces the team's strategy. You'll also collaborate with the Graphic Designer, sharing community insights that can inform what visual content resonates.
What to Expect
We're a small, collaborative team where every contribution is visible and valued. This role has a unique shape — some days you'll be responding to a comment thread, other days you'll be researching aligned organizations to build relationships with, and other days you'll be in a team call helping shape the engagement strategy.
This is a volunteer-run organization. We don't have a social media manager overseeing your every interaction. We're looking for someone with good judgment who can represent TLC authentically, communicate proactively with the team, and adapt as our community grows and the strategy evolves. You'll take cues from the Content Strategist & Copywriter on what's going live and what goals each piece of content serves, and bring your own insights back to the team about what's working.
We'll work together during onboarding to define specific responsibilities that match your availability and strengths.
Qualifications
- Believing in our cause is mandatory 😃
- Genuine comfort with social media engagement — you naturally respond, comment, and build conversations online, not just scroll
- Understanding that community management is relationship-building, not just inbox management
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to match TLC's authentic, warm voice across different platforms and audiences
- Experience engaging across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, and/or Discord
- Strategic thinking about how online engagement translates into real-world outcomes (donations, partnerships, program sign-ups)
- Comfortable working asynchronously via Slack and Monday.com
- Self-starter who can identify opportunities without being prompted — you see a relevant post from a local organization and engage without waiting for a brief
- Empathy and cultural sensitivity, particularly in interactions involving youth, marginalized communities, and vulnerable individuals
- Experience with community management, social media engagement, or donor/supporter relations in a nonprofit or cause-based context is an asset
- Familiarity with non-profit operations and youth programs is an asset
Responsibilities
- Respond to all comments, DMs, and mentions across TLC and Success Accelerator social channels in a timely, authentic, and on-brand manner
- Reinforce the team's content strategy and calls to action through engagement — ensuring that community interactions support the goals behind each post, whether that's driving donations, growing followers, encouraging shares, or directing people to the website
- Proactively engage with aligned organizations, creators, community leaders, and local businesses by commenting on their content, sharing relevant posts, and building visibility in spaces where our audience and potential supporters are active
- Monitor social platforms for conversations relevant to TLC's mission — youth empowerment, mental health, financial literacy, education access — and engage where appropriate
- Identify and nurture relationships with potential donors, sponsors, and community partners through consistent online engagement, understanding that a comment from a local business owner today could become meaningful support down the road
- Help co-develop TLC's community engagement strategy alongside the Executive Director and marketing team, including where to engage, how to engage, tone of voice, and how to measure relationship-building over time
- Thank people for sharing, donating, and supporting — making every interaction feel personal, not transactional
- Track engagement trends, flag opportunities, and share insights with the marketing team on what's resonating with the community
- Collaborate with the Content Strategist & Copywriter and Graphic Designer to surface content ideas and community feedback that can inform the editorial calendar
- Support outreach to local businesses, organizations, and potential sponsors as the strategy evolves
- Actively contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment, fostering creativity and innovation
