Hours & Days of Work: 9:30-3:30, Mondays and Wednesdays to start (12 hours per week), subject to an increase to 3 days per week (18 hours per week), with availability and willingness to work some early morning or evenings, the occasional weekend on a regular or as-needed basis.

Hiring Range: Full-time equivalent salary of $62,000 - $66,000, prorated based on scheduled part-time hours

About the position:
Right To Food is seeking a Community Dining Coordinator to support programming at the Sumac Community Food Centre. The Community Dining Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring meal programs run smoothly and effectively while fostering a warm, welcoming, and positive environment. Sumac CFC’s low-barrier drop-in meals anchor its work, offering a low-barrier way to strengthen social connection and improve food security. The successful candidate will help animate the space, build meaningful relationships with participants, and help create a vibrant, dignified, and enjoyable dining experience alongside volunteers.
Key Responsibilities
Lead drop-in meal program
- Provide a warm and welcoming first point of contact with meal program participants and volunteers
- Create program schedules and materials as necessary
- Train, lead and work alongside volunteers
- Ensure the dining area is clean and safe
- Wash dishes as necessary
- Listen to and record feedback from community members
- Support program evaluation efforts through data collection
- Manage conflict when it arises alongside other staff
Help keep the dining space clean, beautiful, and organized
- Clean and sanitize the space at the start and end of shifts
- Decorate the dining space seasonally
- Keep program supplies stocked and organized
Organizational Support & Collaboration
- Support program outreach and communications
- Role model professional behaviour and positive communication with participants, volunteers and partners through an anti-racist/anti-oppressive approach.
- Promote a culture of health and safety within our space.
- Provide program support to other team members as necessary.
- Align and incorporate Right To Food values into ways of working and contribute to the evolution of our culture, and a work environment that is grounded in Relationship-focused, Integrity, Courage and Equity.
Qualifications & Skills:
Required
- Three years of experience in community-based programs in a front-line role.
- Experience working with a variety of demographic groups, including children and youth and cultural competency to work with diverse communities.
- Knowledge of food security, food justice and nutrition issues.
- Ability to create a welcoming, non-judgmental environment for individuals from all walks of life, ensuring that everyone feels seen and respected.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated experience working with people who are facing food and income insecurity and people of diverse cultures and abilities in a community-based setting.
- Demonstrated a commitment to equity, inclusion, reconciliation and anti-oppressive practice through ongoing learning, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias.
- Availability & willingness to work some early morning or evenings, the occasional weekend on a regular or as-needed basis.
Preferred
- Post-secondary education in a related field of study is an asset (community nutrition, food insecurity, food skills, social service).
- Front of house restaurant experience.
- Strong cooking, food skills and knowledge.
- Proficiency in a second language commonly spoken in the Downtown East (e.g., Tamil, Bengali, Somali, Arabic, Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Mandarin).
- Familiarity with Downtown East communities and local organizations.
- Literacy in common communications/social media programs.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
This role involves regular physical activity in a dynamic community dining environment. The successful candidate must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods throughout shifts.
- Lift, carry, move, and organize program supplies, food items, tables, chairs, and equipment up to approximately 25 lbs.
- Perform repetitive tasks such as dishwashing, cleaning, sanitizing, food preparation support, and setting up/breaking down program spaces.
- Bend, reach, crouch, and move safely within kitchen and dining areas.
- Work in a fast-paced, high-traffic community environment that may involve noise, interruptions, and managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Engage respectfully and effectively with community members who may be experiencing poverty, food insecurity, mental health challenges, substance use, or crisis situations.
