
Communications Specialist
The Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) is a 100% volunteer-run, no-kill animal shelter serving the Etobicoke community since 1987. We rely on the skills and dedication of volunteers to give cats and dogs the care — and second chance — they deserve.
We are seeking a Communications Specialist to support the creation of engaging content for our eNewsletter, blog posts, and internal volunteer communications.
This role is ideal for a passionate storyteller who wants to make an impact by helping animals find loving homes while building their communications portfolio in a nonprofit setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Write and create content for multiple channels, including digital platforms, social media, and print materials.
- Develop and maintain a content calendar focused on animal-related stories and organizational updates.
- Collaborate with internal teams to gather stories, photos, and updates for newsletters, blog posts and fundraising campaign materials.
- Ensure all communications align with the organization’s brand voice and mission.
- Support media relations and other communications initiatives as needed.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience in communications, writing, or content development.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating writing ability across print and digital platforms.
- Proven experience managing editorial calendars and delivering content on schedule.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to tailor tone, voice, and style for different audiences.
- Proficiency with intranet management tools/content management systems (i.e. Google, Microsoft SharePoint).
- Familiarity with digital marketing tools, email marketing platforms, and content management systems (CMS).
- Strong organizational and time management skills; able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- A self-starter who thrives both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
- A genuine passion for animal welfare; experience in the nonprofit or animal welfare sector is an asset.
Time Commitment
- Approximately 3–5 hours per week, with flexibility.
- Hours may increase during major projects (e.g., Annual Report, campaign launches).
