
Communications & Outreach Specialist

Reporting to the Sr. Creative Director, the Communications & Outreach Specialist will be an individual who is passionate about the work of Historica Canada, has had experience working with a team to achieve deliverables in a timely fashion and is enthusiastic about celebrating and promoting the stories of Canada’s cultural and linguistic diversity. The successful candidate is organized, detail-oriented, flexible and a strong communicator.
Key Responsibilities
Communications
- Work with Sr. Creative Director to develop marketing and communications strategies for Historica Canada and its core programs, including cross-program opportunities;
- Research, develop and publish content such as short videos and interactive content across social media, website, newsletters, and other digital channels;
- Write and edit engaging materials such as blog posts, program spotlights, impact stories, and promotional messaging;
- Maintain the content calendar and ensure consistent branding and tone across platforms;
- Create and optimize ad campaigns and creative for various programs and launches, including developing ad copy, video content and images;
- Innovate new ideas for outreach beyond social media;
- Monitor online engagement and respond to public inquiries and messages in a timely and professional manner.
Media Relations
- With the Sr. Creative Director, build and implement a strategy for media relations and augment earned media coverage;
- Monitor media hits across television, radio and web to archive content related to Historica Canada and its core programs and prepare reports on earned media performance;
- Build and maintain a database of media contacts including journalists, editors, broadcasters, and influencers;
- Develop targeted media lists for campaigns and outreach;
- Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, and briefing notes;
- Coordinate interviews and media appearances for organizational spokespeople;
- Identify proactive storytelling opportunities and pitch to relevant outlets.
Outreach & Community Engagement
- Establish and cultivate relationships with community partners, stakeholders, educators, and volunteers;
- Along with Sr. Creative Director, innovate and implement new outreach opportunities for increasing our educator audience;
- Coordinate outreach campaigns, presentations, and engagement initiatives (virtual or inperson);
- Represent the organization at events and conferences;
- Develop printed and digital outreach materials such as info kits, brochures, and posters;
- Collect community feedback and insights to inform communications strategy.
Qualifications:
- A completed degree or diploma in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or other relevant education and experience;
- Bilingualism (French/English) an asset;
- Professional experience in communications and marketing;
- 3-4 years experience in content production (conducting interviews, editing materials) with a focus on social media output;
- Experience conducting outreach and marketing campaigns;
- Experience using various social media platforms;
- Ability to travel within Canada as required;
- Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Premiere or other graphic design and video software required;
- Strong computer skills (Microsoft OƯice Suite;
- Experience working in the non-profit, cultural, education or museum sector an asset;
- Experience in event planning an asset;
- Experience in media relations with knowledge on outreach to journalists and successfully pitching stories;
- Knowledge of Canadian history and an interest in Canadian identity and cultural heritage;
- Ability to take initiative and work independently and with a team;
- Excellent organization, time management and research skills;
- Excellent proof-reading skills;
- Strong interpersonal skills
Hiring Process / Anticipated Timeline

- Please note that all prospective employees who are interviewed will be asked to complete a related assignment. Candidates not selected for the role will be compensated for their time on the assignment.
- The anticipated start date for this role would be mid-January 2026.
